Vote Pilipinas and Youth Leaders Rally For Youth Vote, Visayas Vote at Latest Magparehistro Ka!

Vote Pilipinas, the official voter registration information campaign of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), held the second of its three-part town hall series on July 30, 2021, which aims to educate Filipinos to register to vote. Over various online platforms, the Magparehistro Ka Town Hall, in partnership with Smart Communications, gathered COMELEC officials and youth representatives to appeal to those living in the Visayas region and to the younger generation. The virtual event took place just as we hit the two-month mark on the deadline to register for the 2022 national and local elections by September 30, 2021.

The featured keynote speaker was no other than COMELEC Commissioner Aimee P. Ferolino, who spoke in the local dialect and reminded those in the Visayas that registration was a precursor to voting. This was preceded by opening remarks from Vote Pilipinas founder Ces Rondario, who initially started the campaign as a passion project. COMELEC was also represented by Director Frances Aguindadao-Arabe, who presented the latest numbers on voters in the Visayas region. From her report, COMELEC recorded a total of 893,448 voter registrants from Regions VI, VII, and VIII from September 2020 until July 24, 2021. Also heeding that call to register were Election Officers Krishna Athena Elardo, Omar Sharif Mamalinta, and Dainty Calagos, who were ready to answer any questions on the registration process and data. It was also revealed that those in the Visayas regions need not travel far to register, as one can now register at the following Robinsons Malls: Robinsons Place Ormoc, Robinsons Place Cebu, Robinsons Cybergate Cebu, Robinsons Place Dumaguete, Robinsons Place Bacolod, Robinsons Place Tacloban, Robinsons Place North Tacloban, Robinsons Place Roxas, and Robinsons Place Antique.

Appealing to the youth was host, speaker, and Miss Cebu 2016 Raine Baljak, who said, We must fight long and hard for what we believe in our own way, like a drop of water into the vast ocean. Voting is our right to be heard, and when you vote, you're voting for the people who come before you and who come after you.” She, too, raised some of her personal questions on voters’ registration. Joining her in this case was a roundtable of youth leaders, including Hannah Felix of Abot PH, Carlo Bais of the University of St. La Salle Bacolod Student Council, Janneloise Baylon of the Union of Progressive Students, Jet Luga of Global Shapers Cebu, and Enniss Pareja of Global Shapers Iloilo.

During the program, Vote Pilipinas had announced its newest partners, with some representatives speaking on why they had chosen to partner and what this cause meant to them. The evening capped off closing remarks from Aguindadao-Arabe and the release of the second Magparehistro Ka video, plus announcement of the Magparehistro Ka Challenge, which incentivizes newly registered voters by awarding them with weekly prizes after they post about the importance of registering.

The Vote Pilipinas Campaign is a passion project executed by a team of like-minded individuals driven by the desire to contribute to impacting change in the Philippines. It is a non-profit and non-partisan initiative designed to increase the number of voter registration. With both an online and offline approach, the campaign aims to provide accessible and verifiable information to ensure that Filipinos are updated with news concerning the upcoming 2022 elections. This campaign will run until the elections in 2022 and it aims to target the first time voters and other unregistered voters by providing innovative ways to encourage people to register, and to vote.

Mapúa’s Biological Engineering program adds to stronger RP medical workforce

Mapúa’s Biological Engineering program adds to stronger RP medical workforce

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all sectors to respond to the dire cries of the public, and the academe is no exception.

As a result, it has embraced a critical role in strengthening health and medical programs in hopes of significantly increasing the number of competent health professionals.

As a leading Philippine educational institution, Mapúa University sees its engineering education, particularly its Biological Engineering course, as an enabler to an independent and resilient Philippine health and medical sector.

Through its Biological Engineering program, the university helps address the need for a strong medical and engineering workforce to design new biological products, processes, and equipment which in turn supports the production of existing pharmaceuticals and biologicals, including vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and recombinant proteins.

What are bio-engineers and what is their relevance?
Biological engineers study biological processes and integrate them with different areas of engineering to develop solutions used in bioelectronics, bioprocesses, medicine, agriculture, data science, chemical biology, and molecular biology.

In healthcare, bio-engineers collaborate with medical professionals and researchers to improve existing healthcare systems and tools. They create new technologies that address clinical problems and improve patient care.

In other fields like agriculture, bio-engineers create sustainable solutions that conserve soil, water, and other natural resources. These roles demonstrate the profession’s relevance and impact as a 21st-century career that saves the lives of people and the planet.

Biological engineering is a growing profession, as health and technology converge to revolutionize healthcare. The employment rate of bio-engineers will increase in the field of designing medical equipment, molecular biology tools, and biological processes for the large-scale production of biologicals.

Mapúa’s topnotch engineering, pre-medicine degree program
Launched ahead of other schools in the Philippines in 2008, Mapúa University’s Biological Engineering undergraduate degree is accredited by ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission thus adopting quality standards to produce graduates for the global workforce.

The program combines Mapúa’s cutting-edge engineering education with life sciences so graduates are proficient in creating policies, strategies, and breakthroughs in engineering and medicine.

Likewise, heightened focus on research, development, and innovation (RDI) enables students to conduct advanced researches in biomaterials, bioelectronics, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, biochemistry, bioinformatics, environmental bioremediation, and molecular medicine.

The Biological Engineering program’s diverse discipline makes it a very competitive pre-medical degree for senior high school graduates who want to pursue higher education in the future.

To encourage more top-level graduates, Mapúa expanded the program to include a double-degree, and a joint biological engineering program. These are the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Biological Engineering (MEBE), and a joint program in Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering and Master of Science in Biological Engineering (BMBE).

The double-degree program allows students to complete two undergraduate degrees simultaneously in less time compared with taking them separately. It allows qualified students to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees with just one year added to the normal duration of a bachelor’s degree program.

To date, Mapúa University has a total of 119 future bio-engineers. Around 10 of its graduates have pursued medicine and are studying in prestigious universities in the country.

Applications for Academic Year 2021-2022 are still ongoing. Apply online at https://www.mapua.edu.ph/ApplyNow.aspx

McDonald's Strawless lids advisory SPOTTED: McDonald’s Philippines launches strawless lids

“By testing these strawless lids, we aim to continue our journey to reduce waste. Through this change, we will be able make strides in our waste reduction strategy, while ensuring that our consumers are able to enjoy their iced cold drinks along with their favorite McDonald’s meals, one less straw at a time. We look forward to our customers’ positive response to this initiative and rolling this out to more stores in the country in the coming months." ~Adi Hernandez, Corporate Communications Head, of McDonald’s Philippines
Sip without the straw. McDonald’s Philippines pilots strawless lids for its iced drinks in a bid to lessen the need for plastic straws to advance in its waste reduction efforts.

In June 2021, McDonald’s Philippines started introducing strawless lids across several of its stores. This move is in line with the company’s goal of significantly reducing waste by minimizing the need of consumers for straws.

Now being used in select stores in Metro Manila, the strawless lids will be replacing the flat lids used for iced beverages of McDonald’s which includes all its soft drinks and juices, iced tea and all variants of Iced Coffee. This will be available for take-out, drive-thru and delivery.

This shift in packaging follows the change in McDonald’s policy regarding the distribution of straws, which started as early as 2018 when restaurants nationwide limited the distribution of its straws to select cold beverages only, namely the McFloat, Coffee Float, Milk Tea and McFreeze.

As the company understands this calls for a change in the way their products are consumed, the company invites consumers to answer this survey to learn what they think of this shift in packaging: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/6354749/MCDSURVEY.

BGC’S Sustainability Initiatives Lead to a Healthier City!

Climate change is an urgent issue that cannot be ignored. Now more than ever, we all need to take a step forward in doing our part to keep our Mother Earth clean and livable for many more generations to come.

With this in mind, Bonifacio Global City came up with city-wide projects that BGCitizens can easily take part in. They turned into renewable energy sources for streetlights and buildings, paved the way to increase the usage of bikes and other PMD vehicles, initiated clean and dry plastic drop-offs, and many more!

In 2020, BGC successfully cut its carbon emission down to 37% while offsetting 62% of greenhouse gas by converting streetlights, parks, and buildings with a renewable energy source, encouraging alternative transportation modes, and planting trees and shrubs around the city. The 3,800 trees in its 240-hectare estate helped improve the urban microclimate.

Establishing the 16-kilometer shared and dedicated bus and Personal Mobility Device (PMD) lanes enabled many commuters and car drivers to switch to bicycles and electric kick scooters. By the end of 2020, BGC recorded 5,000 bicycles and other PMD users daily, compared to only 500 users pre-pandemic.

For solid waste, BGC organized a weekly Clean and Dry Plastic Drop-off to encourage BGCitizens to segregate in their homes and drop-off plastics for recycling.

BGC collects an average of 400 kg of plastics per monthA whopping number of plastic waste that could have otherwise ended up in Metro Manila's garbage landfills.  The collected plastics are then recycled into Eco Brics.  In partnership with Green Antz, Bonifacio High Street and Alagang Ayala Land, the clean and dry plastic drop-off is activated every Saturday at Bonifacio High Street B7 Portal by Aldo. Discarded box or Tetra pack containers are now also accepted.

BGC is also one of the greenest mixed-used estates, with 70% of its office buildings recognized as green buildings by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE), and WELL. It’s a testament to how BGC makes a collective effort to turn the micro-city into a healthier place to live, work, and play.

Aside from the earth-friendly initiatives mentioned, BGC has more sustainability programs and initiatives underway. High Street Harvest, a bi-monthly activity that encourages BGCitizens to exchange their clean and dry plastics with herbs harvested from Bonifacio High Street and composts generated from BGC’s yard waste. There's also the Love Food, Avoid Waste project, where condominium residents can turn their household food waste to bokashi compost by subscribing to the Book-a-Bucket program in partnership with Greenspace.

Soon, BGC will also launch the BGC Urban Farm at 5th Avenue. As the name suggests, the urban farm will be open to all residents to adopt a hub, volunteer as “farmers” or simply acquire a farmer-employee. "Adopt a Hub" allows residents to explore urban gardening and grow fresh veggies themselves. They can either bring the fresh produce home or give it to a community in need. This innovative project also welcomes families should they wish to expose their young kids to urban farming. This program not only encourages BGCitizens to grow their own food but also promotes well-being and exercise.

Together with the City Government of Taguig and Brgy. Fort Bonifacio, BGC is finding more ways to lessen its residuals by diverting its solid waste from landfills to recycling facilities and household composting. This commitment is aligned with the LGU’s objective of decreasing its residuals by 2022.

To stay updated on BGC’s sustainability efforts and to know how you can help, visit Bonifacio Global City’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/bonifacioglobalcityph/
