Just a few kilometers from Tokyo Station in Japan, the Imperial Palace offers scenic views in the East Garden where the public can stroll around arboreal spaces surrounded by deep moats and towering stone walls. Guided tours are restricted outside the buildings. Fortunately, the inner precincts open during two occasions: the customary New Year’s greeting every January 2 and the Emperor’s birthday.

As for Japan’s Imperial Regalia, the Three Sacred Treasures are distributed in three holy shrines dedicated to the Shinto Goddess Amaterasu: the jewel Yasakani no Magatama housed in the Imperial Palace; the mirror Yata no Kagami kept in the Grand Shrine of Ise, Mie Prefecture; and the sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi located in Atsuta Shrine at Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. These relics are not on public display, but tourists can still visit the Museum of the Imperial Collections in the East Garden to see the imperial household treasures including paintings, pottery, sculptures, and calligraphy.

In the heart of Bangkok, Thailand, the Grand Palace boasts impressive architecture with several gilded pagodas and intricate embellishments on pavilions, temples, and royal halls. Dominating the Nuremburg skyline in Bavaria, Germany, is Kaiserburg Castle, home to the German kings of the Holy Roman Empire for about 500 years.  Notable attractions include the Romanesque double chapel featuring a Gothic crucifix by Northern Renaissance German sculptor, Veit Stross. Others are the Imperial Apartments containing antique furniture, tapestries, and artwork, as well as the Imperial Castle Museum featuring an array of armaments.

The Imperial Regalia, however, is housed in Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. On display include the stone-studded Imperial Crown, the Imperial Scepter, the Imperial Orb, the Imperial Sword, and the Holy Lance said to have pierced the side of Jesus during his crucifixion. These, among a host of regalia and reliquaries on exhibit, are only part of a large secular collection from across Europe.

Tourists at the United Kingdom often think of the Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London’s 140 royal ceremonial objects including the Imperial State Crown, the Sovereign’s Orb, and the Sovereign’s Scepter when planning a royal sightseeing. For a different monarchical experience, Scotland is a must-visit.

Standing on an outcrop of volcanic rock, Scotland’s Edinburgh Castle has seen plenty of palace intrigues, imprisonments, and even murders throughout the stronghold’s centuries-old history. Some of the places to explore include the twelfth-century St. Margaret’s Chapel, the massive Mons Meg cannon, and the Stone of Destiny used for the coronation of Scottish monarchs and, later on, the monarchs of unified Great Britain.

The Scottish Crown Jewels once worn by Mary Queen of Scots are on display in the Crown Room of Edinburgh Castle together with the Stone of Destiny. Known as the Honours of Scotland, these royal articles include the Crown first donned by James V, the Scepter gifted to James IV by Pope Alexander VI, and the Sword of State also given to James IV by Pope Julius II.

MOA Arena star-studded line-up of acts this May

On April 28, passionate K-pop fans of EXO filled-up the Arena during the Elyxion concert, the 4th installment of the superstar group’s world tour. The multi-awarded K-pop band held a show complete with laser beams, a stylish bar, and light effects that matched their songs perfectly. With fans like EXO-Ls, the show took a mesmerizing turn as the audience made an ocean of silver with their light sticks moving to the beats of the band.

After his last concert with One Direction in 2015, May 1 saw the return of Harry Styles to the Philippines with his first solo tour. Harry did not disappoint as he serenaded his fans with a powerful performance. 

Just a day after Harry’s show, the Arena was again filled with eager fans for another world-renowned performer: Bruno Mars.

The concert kicked-off with a bang, as award-winning dance crew Jabawockeez took to the stage, and segued to Bruno Mars and his band, the Hooligans. The Grammy Award-winning artist brought the house down as he started off with his chart-topping hits “Finesse” and “24K Magic”. 

The 2-day concert attracted Bruno Mars fans including local celebrities Vicky Belo, Vice Ganda, Ogie Alcasid, Luis Manzano, Jessy Mendiola, Carmina Villaroel, power couple Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Maxene Magalona. Some of the celebrities came with their families and friends.

The 24K Magic Tour Manila came to a close with Bruno dedicating “Just The Way You Are” to his beloved Filipino fans. Truly a tour to remember, his performance showered the crowd with gold confetti that matched his eclectic energy on stage.

AXA Philippines first management trainee boot camp

Design graduate and young mother from Las Piñas City, Trisha Denise Montero, won The Big Beauty Challenge Year 2 top prize with her whimsical rendition of the grand finals theme, Extraterrestrial. She first won in the weekly Disney Princess-themed challenge, bested nine other aspiring makeup artists.  She took home Php 70,000.00 cash and Php 30,000.00 worth of Ever Bilena makeup products. The cosplayer, who took a break when she became a mom.

Katherine Catiis won the special People’s Choice Award and Php 20,000.00 in cash. She had the most number of Facebook likes and shares.
Hajie Alejandro received Php 30,000.00 as first runner-up.
Zjhay Taupan got Php 15,000.00 as second runner-up.

A “beautiful mess” led to the creation of the Citizen Jake poster

“It is a feeling of something rough, unpredictable, unfinished, perhaps even damaged that is the story of ‘Citizen Jake.’ Tom got it right for me.” ~Direk Mike de Leon, Citizen Jake Director

Creating a poster is one of the most challenging parts of moviemaking. After all, the poster sums up the story and is considered the symbol of the film long after the screenings. More than a marketing tool, the poster is likened to a precious artwork. 

Mike de Leon and his team purposely took their time before coming up with the poster that would encompass the real spirit and message of “Citizen Jake,” the director’s latest film. After much discussion and deliberation with artist Tom Estrera (who is also the movie’s editor), Direk Mike chose a rough black-and-white sketch in ink and paper to be the design of the poster.

The said image shows a profile of the main character Jake Herrera with a camera in hand and a duffel bag on the shoulder. It shows Jake in work mode capturing the world around him as events happen, as any sensible journalist would. Although one cannot see Jake’s face, the subject looks transfixed at the image captured on the lens. 


There is a story behind the drawing, specifically the noticeable splashy effects on the middle to lower right portions. Actually, the blur was completely unintentional. Tom had momentarily forgotten about the drawing and by the time he came to retrieve it, there was that huge spatter effect that kind of ruined everything. “(But) It was a beautiful mess for me,” says the artist.

“Citizen Jake” is a family drama-thriller that tells the story of Jake Herrera, a journalist and an estranged son of a powerful Philippine Senator. Jake is investigating the death of a young female student. The pursuit of justice leads Jake to encounter the ills of Philippine society and test his personal values and convictions. 

Directed, produced, and written by Mike de Leon, the screenplay is also credited to Atom Araullo and Noel Pascual. Cast includes Cherie Gil, Dina Bonnevie, Adrian Alandy, Gabby Eigenmann, Max Collins, Teroy Guzman, Nonie Buencamino, Lou Veloso, Richard Quan, Allan Paule, Anna Luna, Victor Neri, Raquel Villavicencio, Nanding Josef, Ruby Ruiz, Elora Españo, Cholo Barretto, and features Atom Araullo as Jake Herrera.

Brand New Season of “American Ninja Warrior” on AXN


Hosts Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbaja-Biamila return for their seventh and fourth seasons, respectively, alongside sideline reporter Kristine Leahy who returns for her second season.  

More thrills and heart-pounding moments are in store when the popular reality competition series American Ninja Warrior returns this May on AXN. This season, a total of 500 competitors attempt to become only the second American Ninja Warrior champion, after 33-year-old busboy-turned-professional rock climber Isaac Caldiero made history and was crowned the first-ever winner in Season 7,  taking home the $1 million grand prize.

Retaining the same format, all competitors must finish the course or be in the top 30 in the qualifying stages to enter the city finals. 

As in the past, the top competitors advance to the national finals in Las Vegas, where the grueling Mt. Midoriyama will be the final course of the competition.

In the latest season, competitors push their fighting forms to the limit as they take on the world’s most challenging obstacle courses - including 28 new obstacles - in the qualifying rounds held in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City, and Philadelphia.

Asia’s Got Talent Season 2 Winner The Sacred Riana
