SM City Trece Martires solar system launch to a better tomorrow!

SM Supermalls marked another milestone in its pursuit to make each day better for all at the launch of SM City Trece Martires’ solar system, held in Trece Martires City, Cavite.

The SM City Trece Martires solar facility houses 2,914 solar panels capable of generating 0.5 megawatts of electricity, enough to fully charge 130,000 cellphones, light up 15,500 10-watt LED lamps, run 4,500 30-watt electric fans, and provide power to 300 households. The use of solar energy promotes clean air and saves the environment by helping reduce carbon footprint from electricity produced from combustion of fossil fuels.

Other sustainability programs of SM include the ‘Trash to Cash’ recycling markets in SM malls, and the integration of transport terminals in malls to mitigate traffics for cleaner air. With disaster risk reduction taking center stage on sustainability, SM has been building ‘resilient’ malls with water catchment basins to help manage flood-prone areas.
(L-R) senior vice president for marketing Jonjon San Agustin; SM vice president for operations Lisa Silerio; SM Supermalls president Annie Garcia; Mrs. Aiza de Sagun, representing Trece Martires mayor Melendres de Sagun; Solar Philippines president Leandro Leviste; executive assistant Vincent Bae; engineer Ernesto Cenizal; and regional operations manager Dominador Caringal, Jr.

SM Prime, alongside UNISDR and ARISE Philippines, also hosts the Top Leaders Forum. The theme for 2017 is ‘Business for Resilience – Towards a Resilient Philippines.’ As a private sector conference aspiring to find concrete measures to make businesses more resilient against disasters, the Forum this year underscores invaluable collaboration between the science and technology community and the private sector towards global disaster preparedness.

SM, in partnership with Solar Philippines, first ventured into renewable energy in 2014 with the launch of its first solar system in the Philippines at SM City North EDSA – the first mall in the country to promote solar energy. SM Mall of Asia then launched its solar facility two years after. This year, SM has announced expansion of green programs with more solar systems in eight more malls.

At the helm of SM’s partner in promoting eco-friendly shopping in the country is Solar Philippines Founder, Mr. Leandro Leviste. Leading the largest developer of solar rooftop power plants in Southeast Asia, Mr. Leviste was recognized in the Forbes Magazine 2016 30 under 30 Asia, a roster of young game-changers, entrepreneurs, and social leaders who are under 30 years old.

For exclusive news about SM Supermalls, visit www.smsupermalls.com or follow SM’s official social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; and get an insider access to all the fun happenings at SM Supermalls nationwide through SM’s Viber Public Chat. Tweet your thoughts, upload and share your photos about your memorable moments at SM, then use its official hashtag #EverythingsHereAtSM.
At the ‘switching on’ ceremony, SM highlighted that the solar system rollout all over the country was only part of the many sustainability programs SM has been doing for years. With SM’s solar system rollout and other green programs, SM continues to go beyond mall development and management as it integrates environmental sustainability into its operations to ultimately support communities for a better tomorrow.

Rags2Riches ~ Reese Fernandez-Ruiz, President and Founding Partner Uplifting Lives through Social Entrepreneurship

A major turning point in her life was when she was named Young Laureate for the Environment at the prestigious Rolex Awards for Enterprise in 2010.
Reese Fernandez-Ruiz, Rags2Riches president and founding partner

Reese Fernandez-Ruiz, an entrepreneur. The award brought international recognition to her efforts to help impoverished women in the Payatas dumpsite in Quezon City through the social enterprise Rags2Riches, a fashion and design house that empowers underprivileged community artisans.

Using a business model based on collaboration and inclusivity, Fernandez-Ruiz sought to break down barriers between the underprivileged community and the market. She adopted a marketing strategy that took cottage industry to the next level.

More important, her efforts transformed the lives of the women in Payatas, who provide Rags2Riches its merchandise. From living lives of abject poverty, the women now live with pride and dignity, equipped with entrepreneurial and life skills to achieve their ambitions.

Rags2Riches enabled Fernandez-Ruiz to achieve two goals: Create sustainable and eco-ethical products by upcycling waste like rags, scraps of fabrics, etc. into bags and other fashion accessories, designed for the high-end market; and empower women entrepreneurs in Payatas by eliminating the middleman so they can sell directly to retailers. By partnering with top designers like Rajo Laurel and Amina Aranaz, the Payatas women were able to level up their creations to world-class standards.

Work From Home from Jobstreet.com Your Dream Home-Based Job

“With this new feature, we hope to make the search hassle-free for both the candidate and the employer. Although most of us would want to work at home, there are still some points to consider before taking the final leap, such as your ability to hold yourself accountable to finish your work on time and your general temperament. There are a lot of companies that offer telecommuting or working away from the office as a work option, and a number of them advertise on Jobstreet.com.~Philip Gioca, Country Manager, Jobstreet.com Philippines

JobStreet.com, the no. 1 job site in the Philippines, responds to this growing need by offering job seekers a dedicated page for work-from-home opportunities, making the job search easy and more efficient. The page recently went live on the last week of October.

Some of the companies that advertise home-based jobs on the site include RemoteStaff, SPN, Teleperformance, 51Talk, and goFLUENT.

To determine if a home-based job is the right fit, JobStreet.com lists seven things to consider:

  1. Can your job be done easily from home?
  2. Do you have a dedicated workspace at home to work from?
  3. Do you prefer a flexible working environment or a fixed structure?
  4. Do you work better alone or with your team members?
  5. Does your job require a high degree of face-to-face collaboration?
  6. Are you self-organized and comfortable working independently?
  7. What is your key motivation to work from home?

Being able to work from home has become a necessity for a lot of Filipinos. It allows them to spend more time with their family, save money on food and clothes, and escape the mind-numbing traffic. Meanwhile, more companies are hiring remote workers to get the best possible candidates for a role while also saving on space and money.

Is a work-from-home job for you?
The benefits of remote working are can sometimes far outweigh office-based jobs. According to a study by PGi, a leading provider of collaboration software and services, improved productivity isn’t the only benefit of working from home: 82% reported lower stress levels, 80% experienced higher morale, and 69% reported lower absenteeism.

To search for home-based jobs, just visit https://www.jobstreet.com.ph/homebasedjobs/candidate/index.htm

If it turns out that a home-based job
is not for you, there is still hope.
