The importance of Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management

A person's safety during calamities is mainly dependent on their community's disaster preparedness. No matter how ready they are for all possible catastrophic scenarios, every bit of preparation can go down the drain if their community cannot respond effectively to such events.
It is why a community-based disaster risk reduction and management plan (CBDRRMP) is essential. It places the responsibility of being prepared for calamities and other emergencies on the community as a whole, ensuring that organizations, households and individuals can work together in making their community more resilient in the face of disaster.
CBDRRMP is important, especially for countries highly vulnerable to disasters, such as the Philippines. Situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire and typhoon belt, the Philippines is frequented by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and typhoons respectively. The country ranked 9th in the world in terms of vulnerability to calamities in the 2020 World Risk Index.

One of the most common events experienced by the Philippines is flooding, which underscores the importance of effective floodwater management. There are many ways that local government units are doing this. Efforts range from structural measures such as sizeable underground drainage systems, floodways, pumping stations, flood warning systems, and urban greening to non-structural measures such as minimizing plastic waste, a primary culprit in urban flooding.
With the country situated on five active fault lines, Filipinos must also prepare for earthquakes. It is why many buildings are equipped with earthquake-resistance features. Taking earthquake resilience in the country further are the periodic earthquake drills implemented at the national and organizational levels.
These are good examples of effective CBDRR, where both the authorities and the citizens work together to ensure the safety of life and property in their communities.

SM City Masinag has a rainwater collection tank that can store 17,681 cubic meters of water.

As a trusted and responsible developer of integrated properties, SM has always been committed to promoting Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) in its communities, which is evident in many of its malls that employ infrastructure design centered on disaster resilience. SM allocates 10% of its capital expenditures to incorporate disaster-resilient features, of which installing water management design features is one of them.

Artist's illustration of SM's rainwater collection facility in 22 SM Malls nationwide.

A few examples of these are SM City Marikina, elevated by several rows of concrete stilts to protect tenants and mall-goers during extreme floods. SM Mall of Asia was built with a storm surge barrier for added protection during storm surges, and several malls employ catchment tanks for recycling rainwater.

Across the country, there are 22 SM Malls that have rainwater collection tanks under the mall. All these malls combined can catch and store 79,880 cubic meters of rainwater, equivalent to 32 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“Wherever SM is, we try to help our communities become resilient to changing weather patterns. Nationwide, we have 22 malls equipped with rainwater catchment facilities that help rain water management to avoid flash floods for surrounding communities.” ~Arch. Fides Garcia-Hsu, Vice President of SM Engineering, Design and Development

SM City Olongapo Central's rainwater collection tank can hold up to 14,580 cubic meters of water.

Supporting these are several initiatives focused capacity-building for its stakeholders. It includes workshops & learning sessions on Disaster Risk Resilience Management and regular participation in the quarterly national simultaneous earthquake drills for its employees, and the annual Emergency Preparedness Forum for persons with disabilities and the elderly, two of the most vulnerable sectors of society during disasters.
Similarly, in line with its multi-stakeholder approach, SM Prime has also continuously built long-term partnerships with organizations that advocate for a disaster-resilient Philippines. It includes collaborations with ARISE-Philippines, the National Resilience Council, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the Office of Civil Defense, and the Bureau of Fire Protection, to name a few.

SM City San Mateo's rainwater collection tank can collect 10,800 cubic meters of potential floodwater.

Learn How this Takoyaki Franchise Concept Built More than 40 Branches in Just a Year

When the pandemic hit, a lot of sectors were badly affected. The food industry was not spared and entrepreneurs had to revisit their plans and business models. Stories of hope were hard to come by, but some found the courage to start during this difficult period in our lives. This includes a group of young entrepreneurs who share the passion of bringing Japanese food closer to homes.

What started out as a humble takoyaki bazaar stall in Iloilo has now grown into a merienda favorite with branches nationwide. Otako Monsta takes pride in its unique business model that was designed to be attractive and beneficial to its future partners. Because they knew they wanted to grow their business through expansion, the team focused on creating a franchisee package that has good profit returns.

Otako Monsta has made franchising less intimidating by removing royalty and marketing fees. Low capital investment also makes the brand a good option for young entrepreneurs who want to invest their money. On top of this, partners enjoy a 125% capital margin and will reap their return on investment (ROI) within 1 year.

Co-founder Gian Franco Go believes that their guiding principles in running their Japanese street food empire are keeping a wide range of food options, competitive pricing, and fostering a passionate team that will always have their partners’ best interest in mind. In keeping these beliefs as their core, they make sure they’re always a step ahead from similar food concepts. Otako Monsta takes pride in its wide variety of Takoyaki flavors which can be enjoyed for as low as P99 for 6 pieces. Their best-selling seafood-filled takoyaki Monsta, finished off with their matcha dessert balls, will surely keep you coming back for more.

Taking into consideration foot traffic and competition in the vicinity, Otako Monsta has aggressively expanded across Visayas and Mindanao and has recently started opening branches in Luzon. They closed 2021 with over 40 branches, and are continuing to build this number in the months to come.

If you share the same passion as the Otako Monsta team and have locations for new branches in mind, reach out to to start your franchisee journey.

Sarah G. and Hanabishi Share Tips on How to Score the Best Deals in Lazada and Shopee’s 6.6 Sales

“Sales are good opportunities for you to buy the products that you have been coveting for a long while. At Hanabishi’s official stores on LazMall, you can find a wide variety of more affordable home and kitchen appliances during the 6.6 sale.” ~Cherish Ong-Chua, VP for Finance and Marketing of Hanabishi Appliances

When it comes to enjoying the best deals during Lazada and Shopee’s monthly sales, it’s best to keep in mind these three tips by Popstar Royalty Sarah Geronimo and Hanabishi Appliances.
“Simple, practical tips na madaling tandaan (Simple, practical tips that are easy to remember). Days before the sale period, make a list of the items that you need and search for them. Add the products you plan to buy to your cart, so that you can easily check them out once the sale starts. Mas maganda na meron kang alternatives just in case ma-sold out agad ‘yung gusto mo (It’s better to have alternatives just in case the items you want gets sold out). Make sure you complete your transactions as early as possible. May mga tao na nagche-checkout pagdating ng 12 midnight kasi ayaw nilang maubusan nang gusto nilang bilhin (There are people who check out as early 12 midnight to make sure that they don’t run out of the products they want).~Sarah Geronimo, Popstar Royalty and Brand Ambassador of Hanabishi
The leading appliance manufacturer will be offering great discounts in the 6.6 sales of online shopping giants Lazada and Shopee, which will run from June 6 to 8.

  • 1. Add items to your cart before the sale starts.
At both Lazada and Shopee, Hanabishi will be offering up to 18 percent discount on some of its popular products.

  • 2. Allot a budget.
As you add items to your cart, you can already gauge how much you will be spending. If you go over your allotted budget, search for similar items that are much more affordable.

  • 3. Watch for special deals.
On top of discounted prices, stores usually offer additional deals like free shipping and further discounts.
Hanabishi products, for example, can be bought at further discounts using Lazada vouchers. The appliance manufacturer will also be offering items at 25 percent discount during its flash sales. Its flexicombo deal, meanwhile, gives you the chance to enjoy PhP50 off when you buy two products.
It will also be having the same flexicombo deal in its Shopee store and give away PhP50 and free shipping vouchers.
  • 4. Check out early.
Online stores also sometimes offer further discounts during the first hours of the sale.

“The advocacy of Build Change is to build resilient houses and provide Filipinos a safe space when these disasters come. This partnership will help make that come true. This will be as solid as Holcim cement, durable as Build Change house, and as lasting as the friendship and camaraderie that we will forge with Holcim Philippines. Owning a home remains an elusive dream for many Filipinos. Build Change has been paving the way for increased access to affordable, decent, and resilient homes in the country so we are happy to complement this effort. This partnership also demonstrates that we can deliver business value while addressing social issues and key to this is a credible partner with a strong track record. Through our innovative and sustainable building solutions, and with the right products for the right applications we look to help Build Change in its mission of building more resilient homes and realize our vision of building greener, smarter and for all. This supports our commitment to build progress in the Philippines by contributing to make homes more resilient against extreme weather and natural disasters caused by climate change Doing so allows us to contribute to sustainable development as the lives and property of our countrymen are better protected.~Zoe Sibala, Holcim Philippines Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer
From right are Build Change Philippines Program Officer Marvin Daryl Riego, Country Director Arnel Capili, Holcim Philippines Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Zoe Sibala and Vice President for Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility Cara Ramirez during the signing activity of the partnership for disaster-resilient construction on May 11.

As part of its commitment to help advance progress in the country, leading building solutions provider Holcim Philippines, Inc. is proud to partner with Build Change Philippines, an organization focused on building disaster-resilient homes in developing nations, to strengthen local structures against natural calamities.

Holcim Philippines Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Zoe Sibala and Build Change Philippines Country Director Arnel Capili sealed the partnership on May 11 to work on disaster-resilient housing projects and advocate this approach among stakeholders. The parties agreed to work together to initially support areas impacted by super Typhoon Odette in 2021.

The partners will collaborate on possible projects to build or retrofit houses, schools, and evacuation centers for disaster resilience and capacity-builiding through training and advocacy of policies or financing strategies to key stakeholders. Finally, both organizations committed to develop a scalable affordable housing program in collaboration with other key stakeholders like microfinance institutions to increase access to affordable, disaster-resilient homes particularly for the more vulnerable segments of society.

Capili highlighted the importance of making structures more resilient in the Philippines given its vulnerability to natural disasters such as earthquakes and storms since the country is within the Pacific Ring of Fire and the typhoon belt. He added that climate change further heightens these threats as it intensifies extreme weather around the world.

Sibala, meanwhile, noted the relevance of the partnership to the Company’s commitment to build inclusive progress in the country.

Holcim Philippines Vice President and Head of Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility Cara Ramirez, meanwhile, noted that the partnership strengthens the company’s support for communities to be more disaster resilient having done such projects for survivors of Typhoon Pablo in Compostella Valley and neighbors of its Davao Plant living in flood prone areas.

Build Change has worked in the Philippines since Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. During this period, it has supported both post-disaster reconstruction and work to prevent housing loss against future disasters. Among its accomplishments are the construction of over 2,000 safer buildings for 40,000 people, training of over 4,700 individuals in safe construction practices, creation of 560 jobs, and expansion of its network of partners in local government, business sector for greater impact.

SMDC: Building places Filipinos can call home

A home, to which one can call their own, is one of the most fundamental human needs for survival. In building one’s family, buying housing or investing in property is often a crucial discussion that takes into consideration price, location, amenities and even the environment as these all impact the way people and families live and grow and how communities thrive in the long-run.

Recently, the many changes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic has caused Filipinos to reassess the way they live, work and reside. The topic on home ownership and residential space has only become much more prominent as its impact towards one’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing was emphasized when companies shifted to work-from-home setups and schools introduced blended learning. It has become likely that up and coming homeowners are looking for new and affordable housing that responds to the new realities of school and work, as well as a healthier and more self-sufficient lifestyle.

For leading real estate developer SM Development Corporation (SMDC), the residential arm of SM Prime Holdings, satisfying personal needs and meeting basic survival for the homeowners of today can be done through meaningful and strategic planning and property development.

Over the years, SMDC has been continuously redefining residential spaces to bring accessibility, convenience, function, style and sustainability in the face of evolving trends and lifestyle changes—assuring prospective buyers of the great value that SMDC properties offer.

This means presenting a range of residences located in prime urban and suburban communities, conveniently situated near major road networks and transportation hubs, and designed to reflect SM’s commitment to luxurious urban living. SMDC properties bring commercial retail shops, entertainment venues, banks and leisure facilities closer to residents against a backdrop of lush and walkable spaces. Such open spaces encourage homeowners to dwell outside and take a break from the isolation that has become a norm lately, and allow residents to safely interact with their neighbors. These spaces also provide amenities that promote a healthy lifestyle among the residents.

Across the available properties, prospect homeowners are able to choose their housing type to fit their own or their family’s needs and functions with units ranging from studio rooms to deluxe two-bedroom suites. On top of being able to customize their living spaces, state-of-the-art facilities such as 24-hour security and CCTV system, fire alarm system, numerous WIFI-ready zones and standby generator set ensures continuous function and prime livability.

However, SMDC’s promise not only pertains to providing a greater quality of life, but to also have its communities take an integral role in their commitment towards sustainability. SMDC aims to promote many green living practices by designing walkable and transport-friendly developments, introducing energy-saving and eco-friendly green buildings and encouraging effective waste management programs among residents. For the property developer, homes are seen as a legacy for future generations and should be built for sustainability and for ease in future modification.

With developments still ongoing and more projects in the pipeline, SMDC allows homebuyers the opportunity to have the home of their choice. Through its affordable investment and flexible payment options, new families or young millennials will be able to live independently in communities that cater to their specific needs.

With its ability to empathize and understand current housing needs while having the foresight to address evolving requirements, SMDC continues to create sustainable and resilient living spaces for Filipinos to call their own.

Social enterprises team up to pay tribute to Moms and cover full spectrum of love

“We wanted to come up with customized gifts that not only transcend the conventional considerations for Mother’s Day, but also hone in on our enduring model of creating impact for different stakeholders through partnerships: the cut-flower farmers, cacao growers, and artisan pot makers.” ~Lance Villanueva, the Co-Founder & Chief of Fulfillment of Mayani
Because a mother’s love is unique, nurturing, and all-encompassing. Bride and Breakfast Founder Janna Simpao on a heartwarming moment with her daughter.

It is that time of the year again when we celebrate the efforts of the very person whose unconditional, unbeatable love binds our families together: our super moms.

To elevate the usual gift options for Mother’s Day, leading farm-to-table platform collaborates with premium bean-to-bar chocolate maker Auro Chocolate and key social enterprises GAAN and Agrabah by curating special potted flowers and plants collection with names symbolizing the different kinds of motherly love.

Every gift is composed of farm fresh flowers elegantly nested and arranged in terracotta bowls from GAAN’s artisan pottery community in Pampanga. All are paired with a limited edition Mayani and Auro co-branded Heritage Collection Chocolate Set: 5 chocolate bars from roasted white to premium dark.

Atty. Miscen Desiderio-Dime (Managing Director for Legal Services, Ethics, Compliance, and Regulatory Operations of a large international BPO) gets home and receives a warm hug from her youngest daughter.

Known for its thrust of providing a broader and more stable market for smallholder farmers and fisherfolks, Mayani also works strategically with the likes of the Department of Trade & Industry in expanding its impact footprint across more regions in the Philippines.

Prim Paypon, the Co-Founder and Curator of GAAN, elaborates on the underlying thought and curation process for the collection.

“For Mother’s Day, we thought of celebrating our mother’s unwavering love and remarkable labor to their children from birth to adulthood. We want to celebrate the loving labor of their hands, from guiding their children to take their first step to creating wonderful meals on their family’s table. For this campaign, we named each flower arrangement from how we recall and cherish our own memories with our life’s first greatest woman.” ~Prim Paypon, the Co-Founder and Curator of GAAN

SM PRIME leads with Green Buildings for Sustainable Cityscapes

“Constructing greener buildings provides holistic solutions not only reducing emissions but also promoting social wellbeing. We see this in our developments which drives us to build greener and even retrofit our existing malls to meet green standards. Creating a more sustainable way of life requires a sustainable backdrop that supports the shift. At SM Prime, our passion is to create one that is sustainable and resilient for the life we want for today and the future.” ~Hans T. Sy, SM Prime Holdings Chairman of the Executive Committee

SM Aura Bicycle Racks

Cities continue to shape the way we live our lives – from shifting to greener lifestyles choices to reducing overall carbon emissions to help save the planet. The successful shift to greener cityscapes begin with the construction of green buildings, providing smart innovations that work with the environment and promote the well-being of the people who use these spaces on a daily basis.

According to a study made by the US Green Building Council, green buildings can reduce carbon emissions by around 40% on average, water consumption by around 30% and waste generation by around 70%. Beyond the environmental benefits, green buildings also help meet social needs by enhancing spaces, protecting human health, empowering differently-abled members of the community to take active participation and ensuring access to basic services at reasonable rates. Economic benefits can be felt as well with green buildings commanding higher rent potentials, encouraging ‘greenovation’ and promoting cultural and recreational activities without harming the environment.

Committed to making every day living better, SM Prime has taken the lead in incorporating sustainability and resiliency in its designs, making each component work together as a fully-integrated city of the future.

Among SM’s developments, a number boast of receiving LEED Gold certification while others are in the process of certification such as the SM Baguio expansion, SM North EDSA BPO offices, SM Megamall Mega Tower and SM Retail Corporation, to name a few.

SM Aura

The iconic SM Aura at the Bonifacio Global City is a mixed-use development that incorporates retail, trade halls and a Grade A office tower. The LEED Gold Certified mall promotes resource efficiency, green mobility and green landscapes.

SM Aura Bicycle Racks

  • Green Mobility. Cycling is encouraged with accessible bicycle storage, cyclists’ shower rooms and convenient access to safe lanes to public transit.

SM Aura Premier Park

  • Green Landscapes. The SM Aura Premier Park covers over 55% of the building, uses recycled water and provides enough room for plants to grow while protecting the building and people from heat.

SM Aura LEED GOLD Certification

  • Resource Efficiency. SM Aura uses 16% less than conventional buildings through a high- performance building envelope that reduces solar heat while allowing sufficient sunlight. Through low flow water sensor and metering faucets, it also reduces 1/3rd of its potable water use. Only low emitting materials were used as paint, adhesive sealants and floor materials.

Conrad Manila

Known as a lifestyle center, Conrad Manila is LEED Gold Certified. The hotel is designed with a dramatically-formed angular structure that houses a stylish 347-room hotel, spa and function space while S Maison  is home to a swathe of smaller, more bespoke outlets for brands.

Bicycle racks at the Conrad Manila

  • Luxury Means Green Mobility. Boasting of high-end luxury experience, Conrad Manila remains environmentally friend by providing preferred parking slots for low emitting fuel efficient vehicles, car-sharing vehicles and special parking spaces and facilities for cyclists.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials. Locally manufactured and recycled materials and products were used whenever possible with more than 80% of the project’s construction waste recycled. Filtration systems maintain a minimum efficiency rating of 90% to eliminate airborne particulates.

Conrad Manila LEED Gold Certification

  • Resource Efficiency. Conrad Manila is designed to reduce energy around 12% less than American energy standards. Its water heating system recovers heat from the chiller condensers to produce hot water while its ventilation system recovers the coolness from the exhaust air, returning that into the building. The hotel is outfitted with occupancy sensors, tinted with low emissivity insulated glass to keep heat and noise out,

Going beyond the LEED Certification, SM Engineering and Design Development, the mall's design and construction arm has implemented these sustainable design strategies on the following projects:

SM Baguio Sky Garden

SM Baguio brings outdoor and indoor as one space optimizing natural lighting and ventilation with the Sky Garden. It has a green roof system as well as a provision for an underground water reservoir for storage and reuse of rainwater with a capacity of 4,389 cubic meters.

SM Seaside Cebu

  • SM Seaside Cebu mall goers can enjoy an extensive green area, center courtyard and roof garden. Constructed with low glass and utilizes EchoStop for noise management, the building is designed to maximize natural light and ventilation.

SM Lanang Sky Garden

SM Lanang Premier showcases lush greens, a roof garden and green pavers that encourage filtration and allow stormwater back to the underground soil. It is equipped with a rain water catchment system and a water reservoir with a 546-cubic meter capacity based on 425mm per hour rainfall intensity. It also has a materials recovery facility which receives, segregates and prepares recyclable materials for marketing to end-user manufacturers.

SM Masinag Holding Tank

SM City Masinag helps communities avoid flood waters through its 15,033 cubic meter water catchment facility. It is designed with green screens to promote vertical plant growth and is constructed with Clerestory windows as a source of natural light.

SM North EDSA Solar Panels

SM North Edsa is one of the pioneers of the use of solar panels. It is also the first to have the Sky Garden and elevated parks.

The Mall of Asia

SM Mall of Asia is uniquely designed with a seawall to avert any damage from potential storm surges or seal level rise. Built on reclaimed land, it used an excavation method providing a greater degree of protection against liquefaction and seismic events. It is also elevated above the required building levels and is equipped with wave return and drainage channel to prevent flooding due to storm surges and high waves.

SM Marikina on stilts

SM Marikina sits on 246 stilts and is built 20 meters beyond the compliance for safety zone. At 20.5 meters above natural ground level, it serves as a first responder and a place of refuge for the residents of Marikina during times of calamities.

Today, real estate investors, both for business and personal use, have grown to prefer spaces that support sustainability agendas of the growing population. Pursuing green building standards support the public’s aspiration for more sustainable communities that are designed for environmental and social well-being. SM Prime believes that it is important for developers to work with communities on addressing climate change and achieving shared aspirations – a greener, more sustainable cityscape for all to enjoy.
