Sustainability requires diversity, people-profit balance, says UnionBank’s transformative leader

"When you talk about connection, it's all about people. UnionBank has been known as a digital bank but actually, we're more of a people organization, and diversity is big on our agenda. It's something that we feel is also a key part of ESG. But beyond ESG, we believe in diversity in an organization. And when you have that (respect), connection comes easy. It's important because if an organization is not connected to one another, it will never be engaged to its customers and stakeholders. So, that's how we do it. We don't put digital as the primary goal. We use digital as the enabler. We use digital means to connect with one another. To us, metrics on leadership are more about balance. Like most companies, we do have a balanced scorecard, but we always ask ourselves, 'Are we still seeing too much on the profit side, or are we building too much on the feel good side? Would you rather have a very profitable but toxic company, or not too profitable but people are so happy and healthy? You can be profitable in the short term, but if you don't take care of your employees, the long-term viability of the enterprise will not be assured. But then, if you don't have profit in the short term, you won't reach your long-term targets." ~Henry R. Aguda, UnionBank Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, and Chief Transformation Officer

Panelist Henry R. Aguda, UnionBank Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, and Chief Transformation Officer, shared insights on the challenges and rewards of leadership in a fast-growing industry; and the significance of innovation, reinvention, and resilience amid crises during the recently concluded CBRE Connect Series’ Perspective in Leadership Webinar: Navigating through Challenges & Uncertainty.

Aguda related that for UnionBank, digital transformation is not an end goal, but more of a means for people within the organization to be able to connect with each other, and ultimately, with the Bank's customers and stakeholders. More so, the Bank considers diversity as key to establishing a stronger connection, over and above being a necessary component of its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts.

As companies commit to sustainability, diversity and balance are among the most important focus areas that they must prioritize. This was highlighted by UnionBank during the recently concluded CBRE Connect Series’ Perspective in Leadership Webinar: Navigating through Challenges & Uncertainty.

According to Aguda, the diverseness is crucial to UnionBank's digital transformation as it allows ideas to flow from collaborators with various skill sets and experiences, enabling more innovation. He added that people’s respect for each other's ideas allows individuals to be more connected.

Aguda also underscored the importance of leaders being able to juggle both the needs of the company and its people. At the end of the day, it comes to balancing people and profit, an integral part of sustainability.

LifeWave Helps Showcase Modern Approach to Wellness

In much of the world, the idea of wellness has long been roughly the same as the concept of being free from illness. While this is certainly a key component of being well, the modern reimagining of wellness has developed past this point, to an interpretation that takes a more holistic idea of wellbeing into account.

With this framework in mind, the CEO developed the line of wellness products for which his company has become known — its phototherapy patches. These topically applied patches utilize the power of specific wavelengths of light to reflect energy into a user’s body. Depending on the placement and design of the patch, each one can have different wellness benefits. For instance, the first patch designed by the company, the Energy Enhancer Patch, was created to help promote energy levels and increase a user’s stamina. They’ve also found great success in helping athletes achieve personal bests in competition.

Company background
To better understand the ways in which the company operates, it’s helpful to first look at its history to see how it came about. LifeWave was founded in 2004 by CEO David Schmidt. At that time, the CEO had already made a name for himself through more than 30 years of work in the field of business and development. With an undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems and Biology from Pace University, he spent much of his early professional life pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors in the fields of manufacturing and product development.

Schmidt’s efforts in this area included work to design new ways to synthesize elements, a concept for a bladeless turbine, and even a combustion rocket engine. Based on the strength of these ideas he was invited to work on the Navy’s next generation of mini-subs. David’s work on this project centered around the goal of helping service members maintain high levels of energy without the need for stimulants or other chemicals. In this pursuit, he was motivated by finding a method that was effective but didn’t come with unwanted side effects or negative health consequences.

Fighting aging
A decline in wellness is not caused solely by disease or other conditions, it can also be the natural result of aging. While aging is, of course, a normal part of life, there’s plenty of interest these days going towards how we can help to mitigate the negative aspects of the process. As many people are living longer, they’re looking for ways to increase the longevity of their wellness rather than just their overall age.

To address this issue, LifeWave has conducted innovative research into an area of aging that has fascinated scientists for decades — stem cells. As our normal cells age, they can be replaced via the use of stem cells, however, stem cells become less active over time, causing many of the issues we associate with aging.
The wellness company has worked to address this shortfall in modern wellness through the invention of its X39 patch. This patch works to activate the body’s existing stem cells and help improve processes such as wound healing, skin regeneration, and more. It not only represents a huge leap forward for anti-aging research, but it also shows how the company is keeping at the forefront of the modern wellness movement.

LifeWave is here to help people feel better, look younger, and lead more joyful lives through wellness products that tap into the body’s natural energy and resiliency, and through business opportunities that inspire personal and professional fulfillment. Visit  www.lifewave.com or call us at +632-85409558 for more information about our phototherapy patches.

Allianz PNB unveils new Bikeyard at the heart of BGC

Hellish traffic, the need for greater mobility, and greater health consciousness have combined to drive the growing popularity of biking in the Philippines. The number of bikers grew at the height of the Covid-19 lockdowns when bicycles were one of the few allowed modes of transportation, but Filipinos have kept pedaling on even with the restrictions lifted, having discovered the innate joys of biking. Whether it’s to go to the office, to do chores, or to discover Metro Manila’s hidden wonders, biking is definitely here to stay.

Located along 28th Avenue, Lane O, The Bikeyard is an environmentally-friendly place for people to meet up for rides, discuss hot routes, plan two-wheeled adventures or simply take a breather from pedaling. Standing out amidst the buildings that dot BGC, it is a landmark in itself. The park’s well-thought-out design features bike amenities such as elevated bike racks and tables that can double as bike parking built from recycled and biodegradable material, reflecting Allianz PNB’s sustainability commitment.

Built not just for bikers but for the entire BGC community, The Bikeyard is part of the company’s award-winning Ride Safe campaign, which aims to support Filipino’s growing interest in healthy and carbon-free transport by offering simple, fair, and sustainable solutions. By making biking fun and convenient, it helps encourage more Filipinos to embrace biking as their preferred mode of transportation, thereby helping lower their carbon footprint.

Through its Ride Safe campaign, the company has already donated artistic and functional bike racks to four major parks in the City of Manila, and the country’s first solar-powered bike pitstop in San Juan.

Earlier this year, Allianz PNB was recognized as the #1 insurance brand in the world for the third straight year by the global Interbrand rankings. More recently, Allianz PNB was also named as the most sustainable insurer in the world by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a testament to the company’s adherence to Environmental, Social Inclusion, and Governance standards. This speaks to the company’s commitment to sustainability, which includes plans for youth empowerment, financial inclusion, and sustainable product development.

“Biking is such an underrated activity and I am glad to see more and more Filipinos taking interest. During the pandemic, I saw cities build bike lanes to protect bikers. This inspired us to think of how to support this.” ~Alexander Grenz, Allianz PNB President and CEO

The various projects in Metro Manila, he said, reflects Allianz PNB’s efforts to help provide environmental solutions, adding that “sustainability is in our DNA.”

Next time you’re thinking of going around BGC, consider taking a ride on your trusty bike and drop by The Bikeyard. Not only will you lessen your carbon footprint, but you’re also doing something that’s great for your health.
