Tanduay Pays Homage to the People on 165th Year

“We honor every Filipino craftsman and artisan behind the making of Tanduay. As we celebrate the 165th anniversary of Tanduay Distillers this year, we give credit to the people who have made us the world's number 1 rum. They are the often unrecognized people who silently enjoy and consistently patronize Tanduay. The fisherfolk, the farmers, the chefs, the Balikbayans, the working class, the young professionals, and every Filipino, who celebrate life! We are grateful for all of you.” ~Lucio “Bong” K. Tan, Jr., President

Tanduay is easily one of the most patronized brands in the country. In 2018 alone, it has sold 19.5 million cases of its products in the Philippines. The company has also had a significant presence in five states in the US, Guam, China, and Australia. Plans are already underway to penetrate the markets of European countries.

In marking its 165th anniversary this year, Tanduay celebrates its people and its past. It will soon launch a coffee table book that highlights the men and women behind its success. Additionally, it will be converting its old Quiapo distillery into a brand museum where people can learn more about its rich and colorful history.

The company is cognizant of the huge role that its people play in its success and seeks to pay homage to their skill, artistry, and excellence through its coffee table book.

At the same time, the company is thankful for the Filipinos’ continued patronage its products.

As part of its anniversary celebration, the company has likewise embarked on the conversion of its distillery in Manila into a museum that will showcase its rich and colorful history. It will likewise give its visitors a multi-sensory experience on how its products are made.

The largest surviving rum maker in the country, Tanduay uses Philippine-grown sugarcane to produce molasses that, in turn, are used as raw materials for its world-class rum. It still uses the traditional solera process and formulations that have been passed on for generations.

It has distillation facilities in Lian Batangas (Absolut Distillers, Inc.) and Pulupandan (Asian Alcohol), Negros Occidental, and aging facilities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

As it celebrates 165 years of rum-making excellence, the company looks to continue its success through market expansion and the development of a more premium blend.

Tanduay is the oldest subsidiary of the Lucio Tan Group of companies. Established in 1865, it is also one of the oldest liquor companies in the Philippines.

Throughout the decades, it has become one of the biggest brands in the distilled spirits category, with a 99 percent share in the country’s rum market.

How to stay healthy this season

‘Tis the season to be overweight? Though it can be quite a struggle to resist temptations to overeat with all the festivities going on, you can still have a good time and get through the holiday season without expanding your waistline. Here are some ways to stay in shape and in the pink of health.

Prioritize sleep. Lack of sleep may result in not just fatigue but also poor decisions, such as going for bad food choices and canceling workout plans. Take a 20-minute nap when you can to help clear your mind. Try to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night even with all the celebrations you may have to attend.

Hydrate. Try drinking at least two glasses of water before each holiday meal to avoid overeating. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and refill it often throughout the day. Keep in mind that alcohol dehydrates the body, so if you are having a few alcoholic drinks, have some water in between.

Exercise when you can. Make small changes to your daily routine, like parking your car a comfortable distance from your destination or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, to burn the excess calories from all those holiday goodies.

Take a breather. Running errands and attending holiday parties and family gatherings can be quite stressful. Do your best to limit your stress, whether it is by slowing down or saying no to some invitations. If you are hosting lunch or dinner at home, delegate the tasks.

Give yourself the gift of health protection. Set your health goals early and live them ASAP. Go the extra mile for your well-being with health insurance, like AXA Philippines’ Global Health Access. This health plan provides coverage of up to P100 million and world-class medical service in the Philippines or abroad. This comprehensive worldwide health solution takes care of your medical needs by giving you access to the very best health options available, because you deserve no less.

Xiaomi, Maybelline, and The SM Store Named The Most Popular Brands on Shopee Philippines in 2018! Kickstart the new year at Shopee with the best brand deals at the first Payday Sale of 2019!

Building on the buzz of the new year, Shopee Philippines unveils the top categories and brands in 2018 ahead of the first Payday sale of 2019 from 10 to 18 January. Electronics, Health & Beauty, and Home & Living emerged as the top categories for 2018, with Xiaomi, Maybelline, and The SM Store topping the charts for each category.

Maybelline crowned the queen of Health & Beauty

Health & Beauty rounds off the top categories on Shopee Philippines in 2018 as Shopee users continued to snap up skincare products and cosmetics.

Maybelline emerged as the top beauty brand on Shopee Philippines after a fruitful Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale, where it sold over 50,000 items on 12 December alone. Maybelline’s success was driven by several hit products launched in 2018, such as the Superstay Matte Liquid Lipstick, Hypercurl Mascara, and the Fit Me Liquid Foundation.

Filipino users were also interested in skincare and personal grooming, with P&G, Nivea, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, and Garnier also named among the top Home & Living brands.

Shoppers can look forward to even better deals from their favorite brands on Shopee in 2019, starting with the first Payday Sale of the year from 10 to 18 January. Users can enjoy free shipping with a minimum spend of ₱150, up to 7 rounds of flash sales daily, and the return of the new interactive live quiz game Shopee Quiz after a strong debut during Shopee 12.12 Big Christmas Sale.

Xiaomi emerges as best-selling electronics brand in Shopee Philippines

The electronics category recorded around 300% increase in orders in 2018, becoming one of the top 3 categories on Shopee Philippines as Filipinos shopped for tech products online more. Shopee catered to this trend by onboarding leading electronics brands on Shopee Mall and also launching Shopee Gadget Zone, a dedicated portal featuring Lowest Price Guaranteed deals on tech products from top brands including Xiaomi, Samsung, and Oppo.

Xiaomi emerged as the top electronics brand on Shopee Philippines in 2018. Xiaomi enjoyed a strong debut on Shopee Philippines as the Redmi 5 smartphone sold out in less than a minute during the brand’s first flash sale in April. It was also one of the most sought-after brands for Filipinos, as “Xiaomi” was searched around 900,000 times on Shopee Philippines over 2018. Finally, one of its most awaited smartphones, the Pocophone F1, sold out in 16 minutes on flash sale during Shopee 11.11 Big Christmas Sale.

In addition, televisions were also popular among Shopee users in 2018, as TV brands Ace, Mass, and Avision ranked among the top 5 electronics brands on Shopee Philippines.

Consumers snap up bath and bedroom supplies as The SM Store leads Home & Living

Home & Living was also among the hottest categories in Shopee Philippines in 2018. Bath and bedroom supplies were especially popular among Filipino users; on average, over 2,000 bath and bedroom-related products were sold every day. In line with the global trend of cutting down on plastic use, around 400 stainless steel straws were sold per day on Shopee Philippines in 2018.

The SM Store, the largest department store chain in the Philippines, was the number one brand in the Home & Living category in 2018. Insulated tumblers, oil diffusers, and hard case luggage bags were the hottest products on The SM Store as the brand saw robust performance over the year, ranking among the best-selling brands during Shopee 12.12 Big Christmas Sale.

In line with the growing popularity of online shopping among men, there was also an increase in demand for electrical appliances and power tools as TCL, Bosch, and Lotus ranked among the top 10 Home & Living brands.

Tap area of contour color with your fingers. Add a pop of color on the cheeks, lips and even eyes with the Rose and Peach Sticks. Complete the look with a healthy glow using the Strobe Stick, applying on the high points of your cheeks, the inner corners of the eyes, eyebrow bone, and bridge of your nose, Cupid’s bow, and chin.

Monochromatic
The monochromatic look involves keeping your eyes, lips, and cheek within the same makeup shades. Perfect for any occasion, this makeup trend is not only easy to wear but also easy to apply. The trick is to choose a color that complements your skin tone like Careline Multi Sticks in Rose and Peach. You can apply it all over your lids, even dab some on your cheeks and use it on your lips. Voila! You’re good to go.

Bold brows and lips
Bold brows and lips will never go out of style. To achieve this look, be sure your eyebrows are well-groomed so it’s easy to fill them in with your preferred eyebrow product. Complement your look with bold lips using your preferred shades from Careline’s Metallic Lipstick (P210) or Matte Liquid Lipstick (P210).

Smoky eyes, soft lips
Smokey eyes are perfect during special celebrations or a night out with your friends. It’s easily doable by filling in your whole lids with Careline Color Pencil (P65), which has a creamy texture that can be used as an eyebrow and eyeliner pencil. After application, blend it with a flat eyeshadow brush. Of course, smoky eyes aren’t complete without a swipe of Go Big! Mascara (P185) on your lashes and dramatic winged-eyes using Careline’s Liquid Eyeliner (P105). Balance it out with any nude shade of lipstick using Careline Kiss Sticks (P180).

“The sport was interesting to me. I was encouraged with a group of people I was a part of, to do martial arts. Being the young guys that we were, we started practicing in the streets. After witnessing the first edition of URCC live, I remember telling myself that I will join the next one. From there, I joined the second, fourth, fifth and the sixth editions, and that’s how I got into MMA full-time. Grappling is when you’re on the ground and you try to submit your opponent with a choke or a lock.  Stand up is more of striking. These skills are related to boxing or kickboxing. You need to know the disciplines like the ground and stand up game before you become a professional. What happens in fight camp is that the training is brought at an extreme level so that when you’re in the actual match, it’s just a walk in the park for you. Maraming kasabihan na if you love your teammate, sasaktan mo siya. Some camps actually don’t encourage you to apologize. I had to cope with so many things during my adolescent years. Being an achiever, being away from my family since they were in the province while I was here [in Manila] trying to fit in. Martial arts was one of the many things that helped me establish myself. I wanted to be physically fit, I wanted to fight this illness. It became a metaphor for me. I want to build an international champion locally, whether that’s me or somebody else. I prefer if it is someone else and for that person to be recognized. I was fortunate to witness the evolution [of the sport.] Your sponsors are just coming in, you don’t make a lot of money yet. I want that market to grow. We have so many talents. I want to be remembered as a mentor. I want to be someone who shared unselfishly what I have learned and imparted values to others. Coming from a period when my life was a mess, I want to mold people and guide them in times of their lives not as a champion but as a mentor.” ~Louie Sangalang, a Multi-Sport Athlete

Mixed martial arts, also known as MMA, is a full-combat sport where two fighters attempt to achieve dominance over one another using techniques from various combat sports and martial arts. Louie Sangalang, a multi-sport athlete, has accomplished so much in his life. And at age 40, stopping seems nowhere in sight for him as he continues to make strides among different facets in life, including the fierce arena, where intellect and strength are always tested—the mixed martial arts. Considered to be one of the fastest growing and most popular sports in the world, MMA has only started to get recognition in the Philippines in the last few years.

One of the people who took an interest in the sport when it was just taking off in the country is Sangalang. From a young aspirant, Sangalang rose to the occasion as he competes for big arenas, inside and outside of the country.

Going through cancer

Before MMA, Sangalang was already active in different sports. In college, he was a part of the rowing team and track team of De La Salle University (DLSU.) However, the life of the sports enthusiast took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with cancer—specifically, acute adenocarcinoma of the appendix or appendiceal cancer.

However, Sangalang did not let what seems to be the biggest challenge in his life get to him. While going through the process of recovery, he took an interest in jujitsu, boxing, and kickboxing. This eventually became an avenue for him to pursue martial arts.

Sangalang’s liking for the sport was further strengthened when his college buddy organized the local promotion for the Ultimate Reality Combat Championship (URCC.)

Training for a fight

Sangalang explained that pursuing MMA entails that you know the different disciplines involved in the sport. They can be classified as striking and grappling skills.

However, the sport is not grappling and striking alone. It also requires mental strength and focuses. For Sangalang, this mindset translates to putting together different disciplines to win the fight. For instance, a bit of muay thai, tai sabaki, and karate does the trick for striking while judo, aikido, jujitsu, and combat sambo for grappling.

In preparing for a match, the multi-sport athlete explained that it is ideal to have an eight week to 12-week fight camp with the assumption that the person already knows the basics.

No matter how good you are at the sport, on the other hand, injuries are hard to avoid. In fact, most injuries according to Sangalang happens in fight camp, and he is no newbie when it comes to these things. He shared that he popped two of his ribs, broke the tip of his nose, and sprained his joints, fingers, wrists, and ankles, among many others, during his training and fights.

More than just a sport

More than the physical pain that injuries and bruises inflicted on Sangalang’s body, he also went through emotional troubles. He noted that growing up, he had a lot of angsts, and the sport was one of the things that helped him get through it.

The sport also became his anchor when he got sick. While healing, this became the young Sangalang’s mindset as he expels all his frustrations about the world.

Being a mentor

Sangalang understands that his physical being will weaken as he gets older. But, one thing that he would like to avoid is for his mental faculties to deteriorate. That is why he is doing everything in his power to share his knowledge and skills.

Sangalang is slated to teach at Elite Fit in Santé Fitness Lab in Vermosa Sports Hub. He is part of the Santé Fight Team, an initiative of Santé, a company that provides premier organic health and wellness products and services designed to improve the quality of life of people. It aims to support more athletes in other sports, which in turn inspire more distributors and Santé product users.

Aside from being an MMA fighter, Sangalang is also a triathlete. He is a part of the Santé Barley Tri-team, a triathlon team founded by Joey Marcelo, CEO of Santé.  The company believes that optimal health is not only achieved through proper nutrition but also by participating in various sports events.

Overcoming his troubles in life prove to be well worth it when he became a champion in his weight class, which he shared was his favorite moment as an MMA fighter. But more than that, he also wants to help create titleholders in the future.
