“We always come up with seasonal selections and since this month is all about cele-brating and merry-making for us Filipinos, we have chosen to reward our diners with our TKB shots. They can choose whatever flavor they want. This is why we have partnered with Tanduay, a truly Filipino brand. Through this part-nership, we were able to create unique offerings such as our rum-infused food and drinks selections. Japanese and Filipinos share the same love for good food and drinks. And here at TKB by Tanduay, we want to celebrate that.” ~Karen Roque, TKB by Tanduay General Manager
TKB (The Kushi Bar) by Tanduay, and it specializes in kushi (skewered) selections creat-ed by Japanese chef Yuri Amami, the first female Japanese chef in the Philippines. Here, you’ll also find the TKB shots, deliciously-flavored cocktails infused with Tan-duay Dark and Premium White Rum.

The TKB shots selection includes:
  • Aomori (apple wasabi)
  • Tokushima (ginger cala-mansi)

We Filipinos are such enthusiasts for Barbecues or anything fried, grilled, or steamed as long as it’s on a stick. Japan also has its version of the ever-so-popular “BBQ” and they call it “Kushi”. These Kushi selections are meant to be enjoyed plate after plate—just like how Filipinos dine, its taste will remind you of Filipino BBQ but with a Japanese touch. Kushi is the skewers Japanese use to hold or pierce their food, either made of steel, bamboo or wood.  All reasonably priced.
  • Gyubara (beef tenderloin)
  • Reba (chicken liver)
  • Hotate (scallop)
  • Hatsu (chicken heart)

Roque recommends that diners enjoy them along with their kushi selections, which now have items using ingredients that are popular with Filipino diners.

The idea behind TKB by Tanduay is to promote Filipino dining through Japanese food. This is what makes the restaurant different from other Japanese dining concepts in the country. Gather your friends and family and celebrate with us this Christmas season! Cheers!

TKB by Tanduay likewise supports Filipino farming as it sources most of its ingredients from local farmers. The restaurant also uses organic ingredients, and its coffee is 100% Philippine-made.

AIM MBM ’95 holds first-ever Notables at AIM speaker series

The Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Master of Business Management (MBM) Batch 1995 has launched Notables at AIM, a nontraditional speaker series hosted by an array of luminaries with expertise and insight on relevant topics. Thought leaders and captains of industry are invited to engage not only with the AIM community but with the public in attendance as well. The speaker series kicked off Thursday, November 28 at Fuller Hall, AIM, Makati City.
“It provides a much-needed arena for informed and purposeful exchange on relevant issues. The third out of the seven fundamental human needs is the need to belong or connection. It comes after subsistence and security, and growth and understanding. Inclusivity addresses and fulfills that need. How do we achieve it? We temper if not altogether do away with discrimination. How do we go about it? We start with intelligent discourse. Inclusivity is a critical yet complicated humanitarian issue. Let’s start engaging with it.” ~Marc Ablaza, MBM ‘95 Batch Representative
Marc Ablaza, AIM MBM ’95 Batch Representative, welcomes attendees of Notables at AIM.

With the event open to controversial figures in order to spur intelligent dialogue on challenging issues, the organizers saw it fitting to invite as their first featured speaker the first openly transgender woman elected to the Congress of the Philippines, Hon. Geraldine Roman, who has snagged headlines for her bold efforts in advocating for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) rights. The Bataan representative’s talk focused on equality and inclusivity in society.
“If we are willing to fight against discrimination on the basis of these personal circumstances that have nothing to do with one’s capacity to work, why are we not able as a society to fight against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression? But I have to insist, these circumstances are not chosen and these circumstances are irrelevant especially when looking for a job or qualifying for a post in government. They should not be used as criteria in determining who should receive services from the government or who should be able to enter a public establishment like a hotel or a restaurant. That seeks to protect Filipinos who just happen to be LGBT, from discrimination at the workplace, in schools, in the delivery of government services, as well as access to commercial and public establishments. It also seeks to guarantee that Filipinos who happen to be LGBT will not be insulted in the streets, that they will be ‘outed’ without their consent. They say that the SOGIE bill is same-sex marriage. It is not. In fact, in one of the provisions where there was reference to professional licenses…we were careful to specify that these do not refer to marriage licenses. There are people who may have different sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. But these people have to be treated with dignity and respect. And their rights have to be guaranteed under the law.” ~Hon. Geraldine Roman, Bataan Congresswoman
Hon. Geraldine Roman speaks about equality and inclusivity at the first Notables at AIM: A speaker series.

In her speech, Roman explained how Filipinos are being discriminated especially in the workplace in terms of age, religion, ethnicity, physical appearance, as well as sexual orientation and gender identity and expression or SOGIE.
~Hon. Geraldine Roman, Bataan Congresswoman
The congresswoman is known as one of the champions of the SOGIE Equality Bill. She reiterated that the bill is an anti-discrimination bill.
~Hon. Geraldine Roman, Bataan Congresswoman
Roman also defended the bill based on the many accusations thrown by those who are against it.
They say that the SOGIE bill is same-sex marriage. It is not. In fact, in one of the provisions where there was reference to professional licenses…we were careful to specify that these do not refer to marriage licenses.” ~Hon. Geraldine Roman, Bataan Congresswoman
Roman closed her speech with an appeal to treat the members of the LGBT community with respect.
There are people who may have different sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. But these people have to be treated with dignity and respect. And their rights have to be guaranteed under the law.” ~Hon. Geraldine Roman, Bataan Congresswoman
AIM MBM Batch ’95 with Congresswoman Geraldine Roman.

AIM MBM Batch ’95 organized Notables at AIM to further the renowned international management school’s advocacy in providing quality education. The batch also hopes to raise funds for scholarships.

The adobo Festival of Ideas is Coming Back to Explore The “Connectivity Economy” of Merging Industries and Sectors This December

Adobo magazine will host the fifth annual adobo Festival of Ideas on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila, with a one-day program dedicated to the dissection and holistic understanding of “The Connectivity Economy”, as this year’s festival theme.
With highly-acclaimed speakers from different parts of the globe flying into the Philippines specifically for the festival, it explores the worlds created when industries and sectors intersect, converge, and collaborate. It is also set to look at how the cyclic relationships between these sectors would shape the future of the world and transform it.
Data & Technology, Environment, Education, Entertainment, Infrastructure, Food, Business, Science, Health, People, Mobile, Makers, Arts & Culture, Sound, and Media & Communications – these are the distinct and seemingly separate sectors the adobo FOI aims to bridge together through dialogue and collaboration. It seeks to unravel the boundaries between the aforementioned trades, and explore how the digital and the physical world is merging before our very eyes.
Following the success of last year’s adobo Festival of Ideas entitled, “Creativity at the Heart of Digital”, where over 1,200 delegates were in attendance, it is expected to have even more involved set this year. This time, the festival will take a look at how the modern economy is fueled by collaboration over competition and the role of creative and innovative thinking plays in achieving business and sustainability goals.
Some of this year’s Agents of Innovation, or the 2019 adobo Festival of Ideas speakers, are Royal Pineda, Principal Architect, BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+DesignCalvin Soh, former CCO and the designer of One Kind House; husband and wife duo Patrick Renucci andRachel Renucci, founders of Chen Yi Agventures; Reina Reyes, Head of AC Analytics at Ayala Corporation and a Host of Science Says at the Knowledge Channel; and more to be announced in the coming days.

Jessica Zafra's latest book is now available at Fully Booked, Shopee, and other stores

“Jessica is a natural short story writer, and I don’t know anyone else in the Philippines writing in English who does it as well as she does. The fact that she’s a Filipina couldn’t matter less. She would be recognised anywhere on earth that good English is read. But of course in this fatuous world the unmerited hegemony of “English” literature (including of course American, Canadian, Australian, etc. etc.) reminds us that it still fancies itself as the arbiter of the Real Thing. But plenty of us round-eyes know that’s baloney, and JZ provides us with ammunition to stand up in public and say so.” ~James Hamilton-Paterson, Whitbread Award-winning author of Gerontius, Playing With Water, Seven-Tenths, Ghosts of Manila, and the bestselling Cooking With Fernet Branca and Empire of the Clouds

From the author of the Twisted series comes a collection of 27 stories from the last 27 years. The Collected Stories of Jessica Zafra contains award-winning fiction from Manananggal Terrorizes Manila (1992) and The Stories So Far (2014), plus new stories and an introduction by Don Jaucian.

The Collected Stories of Jessica Zafra is published by Ateneo University Press. SRP P345. Now available at Fully Booked stores, Solidaridad, Popular Bookstores, the Ateneo University Press bookshop, Loyola Bookshop, and on Shopee. Coming soon at Mt.Cloud Bookshop in Baguio and other outlets.

Book signings and author talks will be announced soon. Follow @jessicazafrascats on Instagram and the JessicaRulestheUniverse Facebook page for announcements and updates.

Andi Manzano-Reyes on making the Smart Organic Choice

“For me, being a mom has changed the way I make decisions. There’s this concern that some products might be made with a lot of chemicals that aren’t going to be helpful for your child’s development-- there’s always that fear. We don’t always go organic but when we have the chance to do so and it’s available, we do it. Choosing organic food gives me peace of mind knowing that whatever we ate, drank or put in our body was straight from the ground and has no chemicals.” ~Andi Manzano-Reyes

Deciding what’s best for the family is a struggle for every mom. Andi Manzano-Reyes is no stranger to this – although she considers herself a smart homemaker, she still struggles sometimes when it comes to making choices for her family’s health.

Having her first daughter, Olivia, was what motivated Andi and her husband GP to make a lifestyle check.  she said. Health and nutrition became a priority for her, and it became increasingly important that she becomes more meticulous especially with the food that she prepares for her daughter.

Andi was inspired by her fellow moms who lead a healthier and more natural lifestyle, and this is where she was also introduced to organically sourced food. Organic products follow a strict standard that ensures there are no artificial pesticides, growth hormones, and synthetic antibiotics used during its production process.

Olivia, now 4 years old, loves fruits and vegetables – food that Andi regularly includes in her diet. Since Olivia is very adventurous when it comes to food (especially spicy ones!), she and Andi make preparing food a fun time for them. They usually cook Filipino dishes and make homemade fruit ice popsicles or salads together.

Although Andi doesn’t always serve organic food to her family, she chooses smart when it comes to Olivia’s milk. She wants to make sure that Olivia gets the best available milk that provides age-appropriate nutrition with the assurance of organic.

After doing thorough research and consulting fellow moms, Andi discovered Promil Organic and choosing it for Olivia’s milk was an easy decision for Andi. Firstly, Promil Organic is made by Wyeth Nutrition, the leading formula milk manufacturer in the Philippines with over 100 years of scientific expertise.

Secondly, Promil Organic is made with 100% organic milk sourced from certified organic dairy farms. It is certified organic by the Organic Certification Center of the Philippines (OCCP) Inspection & Services Inc, following strict organic requirements.

Lastly, Promil Organic is the only organic formula milk in the Philippines intended for preschoolers aged 3+ that contains DHA & AA – important nutrients that help support a child’s brain development.

Just like Andi, all moms can make a smart organic choice when it comes to their children’s nutrition. To know more about Promil Organic and its other benefits, visit https://www.wyethparenteam.com.ph/products/promil-organic.

Tanduay x Theo & Philo Chocolates

“We continue to create innovative ways for people to enjoy rum. The collaboration between two award-winning brands -- Tanduay and Theo & Philo – gives us a truly Filipino product we can be proud of.” ~Paul Lim, Tanduay Distillers, Inc. chief marketing officer

Tanduay recently partnered with Theo & Philo Chocolates to come up with a chocolate bar that’s made up of 65% dark chocolate with house-made caramel and infused with the much-awarded Tanduay Asian Rum Gold. Attached is the material about this exciting new product.

It is in the Davao region that local chocolatier Theo & Philo sources its cacao ingredients for the production of its best-selling chocolates in Manila. Most recently, it partnered with Tanduay to come up with the Theo, Philo & Tanduay—a chocolate bar made with 65% dark chocolate filled with house-made caramel and the much-lauded Tanduay Asian Rum Gold.

In 2018, Tanduay Asian Rum Gold received the Gold award from the International Review of Spirits, the Silver award from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and another Silver Award from the WSWA Tasting Competition. Prior to that, it received the Gold Medal from the Monde Selection, the 3-Star Superior Taste Ward from the International Taste & Quality Institute, the Gold award from the International Review of Spirits, Beverage Testing Institute—all in 2017.

As the cacao used in making Theo, Philo & Tanduay is solely sourced in Davao, the sugarcane used for Tanduay Asian Rum Gold is sourced and harvested from Bacolod. All Tanduay products are also proudly Philippine-made.

Brought to the country by the Spaniards in the 18th century, cacao has found a fertile land to grow in the Philippines. Because of our strategic location near the equator, the plant flourished and cacao plantations can now be found in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Theo, Philo & Tanduay is exclusively available at the Tanduay Store at Century Park Hotel in Malate, Manila.
