Mapúa’s Biological Engineering program adds to stronger RP medical workforce

Mapúa’s Biological Engineering program adds to stronger RP medical workforce

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all sectors to respond to the dire cries of the public, and the academe is no exception.

As a result, it has embraced a critical role in strengthening health and medical programs in hopes of significantly increasing the number of competent health professionals.

As a leading Philippine educational institution, Mapúa University sees its engineering education, particularly its Biological Engineering course, as an enabler to an independent and resilient Philippine health and medical sector.

Through its Biological Engineering program, the university helps address the need for a strong medical and engineering workforce to design new biological products, processes, and equipment which in turn supports the production of existing pharmaceuticals and biologicals, including vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and recombinant proteins.

What are bio-engineers and what is their relevance?
Biological engineers study biological processes and integrate them with different areas of engineering to develop solutions used in bioelectronics, bioprocesses, medicine, agriculture, data science, chemical biology, and molecular biology.

In healthcare, bio-engineers collaborate with medical professionals and researchers to improve existing healthcare systems and tools. They create new technologies that address clinical problems and improve patient care.

In other fields like agriculture, bio-engineers create sustainable solutions that conserve soil, water, and other natural resources. These roles demonstrate the profession’s relevance and impact as a 21st-century career that saves the lives of people and the planet.

Biological engineering is a growing profession, as health and technology converge to revolutionize healthcare. The employment rate of bio-engineers will increase in the field of designing medical equipment, molecular biology tools, and biological processes for the large-scale production of biologicals.

Mapúa’s topnotch engineering, pre-medicine degree program
Launched ahead of other schools in the Philippines in 2008, Mapúa University’s Biological Engineering undergraduate degree is accredited by ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission thus adopting quality standards to produce graduates for the global workforce.

The program combines Mapúa’s cutting-edge engineering education with life sciences so graduates are proficient in creating policies, strategies, and breakthroughs in engineering and medicine.

Likewise, heightened focus on research, development, and innovation (RDI) enables students to conduct advanced researches in biomaterials, bioelectronics, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, biochemistry, bioinformatics, environmental bioremediation, and molecular medicine.

The Biological Engineering program’s diverse discipline makes it a very competitive pre-medical degree for senior high school graduates who want to pursue higher education in the future.

To encourage more top-level graduates, Mapúa expanded the program to include a double-degree, and a joint biological engineering program. These are the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Biological Engineering (MEBE), and a joint program in Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering and Master of Science in Biological Engineering (BMBE).

The double-degree program allows students to complete two undergraduate degrees simultaneously in less time compared with taking them separately. It allows qualified students to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees with just one year added to the normal duration of a bachelor’s degree program.

To date, Mapúa University has a total of 119 future bio-engineers. Around 10 of its graduates have pursued medicine and are studying in prestigious universities in the country.
