Dietitians Share 10 Tips for Healthy Eating to lose weight the Smart Way

By: Susan Bowerman M.S., RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND – Sr. Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training

When was the last time you consulted a dietitian? If you’re like most people, you may turn to friends or family with questions regarding weight management, starting a new diet or your personal nutrition. But that may cause even more confusion and uncertainty surrounding the choices you make to maintain a healthy weight.

A Survey of Dietitians on Weight Management
As a global nutrition company, we consult with members of our Dietetic Advisory Board* (DAB) from around the world to stay ahead of the latest nutrition trends, and develop training materials for our independent distributors to help their customers make informed decisions about nutrition. But we wanted to dig deeper and understand the key issues and challenges facing many struggling dieters.
We recently surveyed dietitians who attended the 2018 annual meeting of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics about their patient’s nutrition goals, diet-related misconceptions, behavioral hurdles, and challenges related to following a healthy meal plan. Highlights from that survey include:
  • Nearly 57% listed “losing weight” as the most common goal among patients reported by their dietitians.
  • Approximately 20% of dietitians reported, “eating a healthier diet” as a goal or concern of their patients.
  • Among patients, the most common misconception is that “a very low carb diet is the best way to lose weight and keep it off.” This was reported by 31% of the dietitians surveyed.
  • Other common misconceptions include: “you should cut all forms of sugar from your diet” (24%) and “vegetarian diets are protein deficient” (20%).
  • When it comes to staying on regimen, more than half of dietitians (51%) reported “lack of motivation to stay on the plan” as their patient’s biggest behavioral obstacle.
  • Dietitians also observed that many of their patients struggled with the “inability to control portion size” (18%) and “inadequate time to prepare meals” (18%).
  • Practical Advice from Our Dietitian Nutritionists
  • To address these common dietary pitfalls, we asked our DAB members to share their top 10 tips to help you achieve your weight loss and nutrition goals.

Tip 1: Don’t just focus on weight loss. Focus on a healthy diet.
“People should not focus only on body weight; they should focus on health. Eating healthy and having an active lifestyle is the best way to achieve a healthy body composition. Keep your focus on eating a healthy balanced diet and working out to build or maintain your muscle mass – and keeping this healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life.” ~Ana Cristina Gutierrez, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Costa Rica
Tip 2: Set and celebrate milestones during your weight loss journey.
“Celebrating every milestone is important to your weight loss effort because it keeps you looking at how far you’ve come, not how far you have to go. When it comes to weight loss, a slow and steady pace always seems to win the race, but that pace can feel frustrating at times. So, set plenty of little milestones along the way and find ways to reward yourself – you might want to buy a new article of clothing or treat yourself to a message. Remember, you deserve it after all of your hard work!” ~Aria Novitasari Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Indonesia
Tip 3: Don’t fall victim to fad diets or social influence – find a healthy, balanced plan that works for you.
“Fad diets may lead you to temporarily lose weight, but is not a healthy way to lose because you risk losing some of your hard-earned muscle mass, rather than body fat.  Before falling for any social influence, remember the goal should not be only to lose weight, but to change your lifestyle for good with a healthy balanced diet and adequate physical activity.” ~Sreyashi Moitra, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, India
Tip 4: Make sure you get enough protein.
“Protein is an essential nutrient that is important for optimal growth and development.  It is also essential for helping build and maintain muscle mass. Protein plays an important role in weight control because it helps with hunger control.  Having adequate protein at meals and snacks, such as protein shakes or bars, helps to satisfy you.” ~Alice Zhu, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, China
Tip 5: Incorporate healthy snacking.
“In today’s society, snacking contributes close to one-third of daily energy intake. But healthy, balanced snacks are an important part of a balanced diet. Taking in high-protein snack foods can help you feel satisfied, and may allow you to eat less at your next meal.  Rather than feeling guilty about snacking, learn to incorporate healthily snacking into your day.” ~Vipada Sae-Lao, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Thailand
Tip 6: Don’t cut calories too far or skip meals in order to lose weight.
“Dieting is not about how much you eat but what you eat since food choice affects calorie intake the most. Extremely low-calorie diets can slow down metabolism and inhibit weight loss. Dietary modification helps you continue your weight loss journey while diet mistakes – like cutting too many calories, or skipping meals – can stop you from being successful.” ~Venus Yuen, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Hong Kong
Tip 7: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity every day.
“One of the benefits of regular exercise is that it helps to burn calories, which can help with weight loss and weight maintenance.  And, regular moderate activity can also help release stress.  Think of ways to work more activity into your day.  For example, exit the subway or bus two or three stops before your final destination, and then walk the rest of the way on foot.” ~HaNa Jang, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, South Korea
Tip 8: Learn ways to prepare quick, healthy meals.
“Planning ahead for your meals will help determine what ingredients you need to purchase and help you to stock your refrigerator, freezer, and pantry so you can prepare quick, healthy meals. Pre-preparing foods help, too.  Foods that require longer cooking times, such as beans and whole grains, can be cooked in large quantities and then kept in the freezer to be used at another time. Vegetables can be washed and dried in advance for use during the week. Eating healthy is a great start to living a healthier lifestyle, but cooking healthier is the perfect way to help you maintain this healthy living.” ~Carolina Pimentel, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Brazil
Tip 9: Learn ways to practice portion control.
“Portion control is a key factor in weight control. If you learn to control portion sizes, you can reduce your total calorie intake.  To reduce portions, try using smaller plates, glasses, utensils and serving spoons. It also helps to always put your portion on a plate or bowl, rather than eating directly from packages, which can lead to overeating.” ~Clara Lucia Valderrama, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Colombia
Tip 10: Learn how to read food labels.
“Knowing exactly what you eat and drink is important when you’re watching your weight. Learning to read food labels helps, as it gives you information on calories, nutrient content and also serving size. This helps you with portion control and helps you make healthier food choices.” ~Charlotte Lok, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Singapore
BONUS Tip: Start your day with a balanced breakfast.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A healthy, balanced breakfast can not only help you to manage your weight, concentrate at work or school, but it also helps you to stay focused on your activities.  Breakfast should include a balance of protein, carbohydrate, and fat. If you have a busy schedule, consider making a healthy shake instead of relying on fast food or skipping breakfast entirely.” ~Chandra Lin, Member, Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board, Taiwan

Allianz Honored With Presidential Citation From the Phil. Heart Association for 2nd Straight Year

“The numbers are alarming when it comes to the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. Angina, for one, has caused 17.3 million deaths each year. As a company that advocates health protection, we consider it our duty to do our share in promoting awareness about heart health.” ~Gae Martinez, Allianz Philippines Chief Marketing Officer
Allianz Philippines chief marketing officer Gae Martinez (left) receives the Philippine Heart Association’s (PHA) Presidential Citation from PHA president Dr. Nannette Rey (right) at a ceremony held recently in Conrad Hotel, Pasay City. Allianz Philippines is the only a non-pharmaceutical company that received the award for its support to the advocacy on building awareness about cardiovascular health.
The recent citation received by Allianz PNB Life from the Philippine Heart Association, the foremost organization of cardiologists in the country. Allianz is the only non-pharmaceutical company to receive the award for two consecutive years.

Allianz Philippines recently received a presidential citation from the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) for staunchly supporting its advocacy projects geared toward creating awareness and lay education about cardiovascular health. This is the second year that the company received the award. It is the only non-pharmaceutical company to have done so.

Allianz Philippines was the Official Life Insurance Partner of the PHA in its celebration of Heart Month last February. For two years running, the company has also been the PHA’s partner for its Camp Braveheart. Conceptualized in 2007, the program seeks to encourage children who were born with heart disease and have undergone surgery to live a normal life like other kids. During the said event, Allianz conducted a financial literacy exercise for the participating kids’ parents.

Also, last February, Allianz Philippines sponsored the PHA’s Heart Fair in Tacloban as well as the launch of their Angina Awareness campaign in K. Kangleon, Palo, Leyte. Angina is one of the symptoms of coronary heart disease and is the world’s number one killer, according to the World Health Federation. Cardiovascular disease is now considered an epidemic that is projected to cause 52 million deaths in 2030 unless measures are taken.

Allianz and the PHA have, likewise, partnered in a nationwide Health Caravan that went to the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Cebu, and Manila. PHA doctors delivered lectures educating bankers and agents about angina and the 502100 campaign, which encourages people to live a healthy active lifestyle.

More recently, Allianz and the PHA launched the Fit Heart Minute videos, which aims to teach Filipinos to be more active. They consist of one-minute exercise videos featuring Dr. Rey as well as fitness coaches and TV host Jim and Toni Saret.

The life insurance company has been a staunch supporter of PHA in creating awareness and educating more Filipinos on cardiovascular health.

Historia Culinaria y Cultura a Heritage Festival

Indeed it's more fun in the Philippines because we have a lot of different celebrations that introduces what Filipinos are good and fun with. One of which is the upcoming Historia Culinaria y Cultura happening on June 8, 2019, a 2-day festival celebrates 121 years of Philippine Independence through a showcase of heritage food, fashion, and culture in Taal Heritage Town, Taal, Batangas.

Experience a celebration of Philippine Independence Day like no other. The Historia aspect aims to educate visitors on interesting and little known facts about Philippine significant segments in Philippine history, particularly on the aspects of art and architecture. There will be talks by experts on Philippine History Art and Architecture, and guided tours to historical places in Taal—especially the houses of illustrious Filipino families that have helped achieve Filipino nationhood.

There will also be Film Showings featuring momentous period films that showcase the skill and soul of noted Filipino filmmakers. Apart from that, amateur and professional photographers will display their snapshots of Taal’s historical places in a 2-day Photo Contest.

Culinaria Filipina will be highlighted during the Pop Up Lunch. Here the Malolos Congress menu will be recreated and served in one of Taal’s ancestral house where the attendees will be required to put on a full period costume.

Calle Tienda, on the other hand, is a 2-day food fair (from June 8 to 9) to be held at Taal’s Social Plaza featuring local and fusion Filipino delicacies. On Calle Jose Diokno, topnotch Filipino culinary artists will conduct food demos on popular Filipino delicacies, traditional cuisine, and long-lost heritage menus.

Cultura, the distinctive Filipino culture which marries Western and Eastern influences into one fluid and vibrant way of life, becomes the inspiration of 3 centerpiece events. The “Mutya at Ginoo ng Kultura”, is the first ever search for the male and female ambassadors who embody Filipino cultural ideals and promote heritage tourism by advocating the preservation and conservation of local culture.

In cooperation with the Lyric Opera of the Philippines or LyrOpera, “Kundiman ng Lahi”, on the other hand, is a concert of well-loved Filipino music that highlights the different aspects of the Filipino psyche.

As a fitting finale, the grand “Historia en La Moda” is a fashion exposition gala that traces the evolution of traditional Filipino attire from pre-Hispanic times to the genteel days of the pre-war era. “Historia en la Moda” will see the masterful creations of Manila’s top fashion designers as they capture the transformations of the Philippine traditional wear.

These events will happen on June 8 and 9, 6:00 pm, at the Taal Social Plaza in Calle Mariño-Agoncillo, Taal Heritage Town, Taal, Batangas.

“HISTORIA, CULINARIA, Y CULTURA” is one of the advocacy programs of CASA HISTORIA, a group spearheaded by acclaimed designer Lito Perez and includes members from different professions and endeavors who share a passion for Filipino arts, culture, and history.

Perez started the daring initiative to help preserve architectural legacies—an integral part of the rich tapestry of Filipino cultural heritage—in danger of being torn down. In Perez’s vision, past clutches hands with the present to assure the survival of these architectural gems by giving them a significant purpose in the contemporary setting without compromising their integrity and soul. This strategy assures the structures’ continued existence while re-purposing it for a new function and pumping new life into these ancestral mansions.

In the past couple of years, Casa Historia has preserved and maintained houses like:
  • Villa Tortuga (Taal, Batangas)
  • Arce Mansion (Vigan, Ilocos Sur) and Casa La Demetria (Pagsanjan, Laguna)

Perez has also served as a consultant for the restoration of:
  • Ning Balemi (Pampanga)
  • Villa Saryaya (Sariaya, Quezon)
  • Tampuhan Café (Taal, Batangas)
  • Casa Asunción (Balayan, Batangas) which is owned by the famous actor Leo Martinez.

Currently in the process is one of the oldest houses in the Philippines:
  • Villa San Vicente in Vigan Ilocos Sur, as well as a few other houses waiting to be restored and given a new life.
  • Casa Lilang (Taal, Batangas)
  • The Historic Noble House in Caysasay, Batangas

Innovation at work
One example of the smart healthcare innovation is the range of products offered by Asus Life, a subsidiary of the Taiwan Excellence Award winner Asustek Computer. The company recently worked with hospitals to offer smart medical care solutions for patients.

OmniCare is a medical Internet-of-Things platform that collects biometric data from various instruments and smart wearable devices. PhenoFinder is a platform that integrates patient medical records at all hospitals and big data analysis.

Zenbo is a smart robot equipped with facial recognition functionality, and AiNurse is a virtual caregiving robot that can communicate with patients via voice or text.

Meanwhile, 2019 Taiwan Excellence awardee Onyx Healthcare Inc. also created medical products that optimize and seamlessly automate hospital processes that are usually done on paper.

The company’s medical tablet MD101 aids nurses as they gather the data of a patient’s vital signs, thus reducing the time spent on each patient, which is usually up to 12 minutes.  Altogether, their products help improve the accuracy and efficiency of over-all patient care in hospitals.
