LIGHT NETWORK GOES DIGITAL!

“Tayo ang unang nag-convert from Analog to Digital transmitter. Wala nang test -broadcast. Official broadcast na agad. Yes. Maibabalik ang TV bilang prime Media tool.” ~Engr. Antonio Soriano, the Vice President of Technical Operations for Light Network

Light Network channel 33 is achieving greater innovation as it begins its official broadcast on Digital Television this coming March 2017! Through this exciting breakthrough, viewers in Mega Manila will soon be able to experience a clearer and highly-improved video and sound quality of Light Network in their televisions. Once official broadcast begins, people can now watch Light Network anytime and anywhere because not only will the channel be available on digital boxes and digital-ready televisions, but it could also be accessed through handheld devices such as tablets, smartphones and other gadgets.

The “digitalization” is the process of converting our current Analog Television broadcasting into Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), which simply means that our existing television technology will be transformed into an upgraded, higher quality of broadcast system. Through this digital improvement, Light Network will soon be available on multiple digital viewing platforms—broadening its horizon among the television programming sphere.

In an interview with Engr. Antonio Soriano, the Vice President of Technical Operations for Light Network, he said that he is excited for the upcoming Digitalization of Light Network, because the channel had long since been prepared for this huge digital switchover. He also said that not all channels are ready to make the digital “switch”, making Light Network the first channel in the  Philippines to migrate to the exciting

According to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), once the innovative technology of Digitalization is fully implemented, it would not only deliver better image and sound quality to our television channels, but it would also be able to provide features such as datacasting, multi-channel platform, One Seg, and most importantly, the Emergency Warning Broadcast System (EWBS), which is used to transmit nationwide warning announcements in times of earthquakes, tsunamis, or other high-alert disasters.

Engr. Antonio Soriano further stated that these features are just few of the many benefits of Digital TV. According to him, through the other upcoming advancements in Digitalization, television will finally regain its essential standing in the lives of people, as compared to the rising media usage for mobile devices.

Mac Belo New Endorser of Blackwater

“My love for the sport started in high school. My older brother was the one who got me into basketball, and I began to enjoy it when my friends encouraged me to join the varsity. After that, I was given the opportunity to play for FEU where I was given proper training, and my career took off from there. Being able to play professional basketball is a big achievement for me, but it also took a lot of discipline and hard work to earn my PBA spot. Even off court, I’m constantly trying to improve my skills. I work on strengthening exercises at the gym. I try to get enough sleep and eat healthy, in fact I trained myself to avoid pork and oily food. I also maintain a good personal hygiene by taking a shower before and after practice, and using Blackwater Men’s spray to keep me smelling good even while training.” ~Mac Belo
When you smell good, you feel good!
Mac Belo enters Philippine basketball’s big leagues with Blackwater

Rey Mark “Mac” Belo, the newest endorser of Blackwater for Men, looks every inch an athlete on camera and in person – standing six feet four inches tall with a muscular build that can only be acquired from hours spent studying screen drills, acing his shots and dribbles in the basketball court.

Spritz on Blackwater Sports for Men so that you feel fresh and confident anytime, anywhere, so that even if you live an active lifestyle, you know you'll still do great.

However, his imposing frame hides a shy personality. The soft-spoken Mac admits that he is still not comfortable with interviews, preferring to be seen in action.
A native of Midsayap, Cotabato, Mac first became known for his buzzer-beater shots against De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University, where he led his alma mater, Far Eastern University (FEU), to their back-to-back finals spot in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP). He finished strong in his final playing year by clinching a UAAP championship and bagging the Most Valuable Player award.

Now a power forward for Blackwater Elite of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and also part of the pool of players for the Gilas Philippine National Team, the player admitted that he was a late-bloomer in basketball.

But moving from college to professional basketball was a different playing field for him. Training sessions grew more intense with three hours of practice daily, and getting drafted into the PBA meant competing with other athletes whose skill level in the sport match his own.

These and love for the sport have paid off: he has become one of PBA Philippine Cup’s top rookie players in the first half of its 2016-2017 conference, helping his team earn three straight wins for the first time since its inception.

With this newfound recognition, he acknowledges the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Besides pushing his body to its limits with daily training sessions. Indeed, Mac Belo’s dedication, discipline, and passion for the sport not only make him one of the sought-after rookie athletes of his generation, but also the perfect personality to be included in Blackwater’s roster of highly regarded endorsers.

Richard Corminal: An OFW fulfilling a longtime dream to compete in MMA

“When I saw an MMA bout for the first time, I got hooked. It was exciting, and it’s something different. There are a lot of options to win and weapons to utilize. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be an MMA fighter. It was a tough decision to make, but I have a family to support. They are my top priority. I chose to work abroad and try to give them a good life. MuayFit gave me the chance to fulfill my dream to become an MMA fighter. I’m so grateful for that opportunity. It was difficult as expected, but I wanted to be an MMA fighter so bad. I chose to endure. I kept on telling myself that pain is temporary. I just pushed harder every single day. I am so happy. The feeling is like winning an MMA title. ONE Championship is the biggest promotion in Asia, and to be part of it, it’s truly an honor. Everything that I did in training is all worth it because I’ve made it here. I was only dreaming of this moment before. Now, I am here. I see my upcoming fight as a test and an opportunity to know my level as a competitor in this constantly-evolving sport. A dream doesn't become reality through magic. It takes sweat, determination and hard work. Keeps your dreams alive because all things are possible.” ~Richard Corminal

Every year numerous Filipinos leave their homeland in search for greener pastures abroad, with the goal of getting a decent job so as to provide their families with comfortable lives. With the idea of better opportunities in other countries, many take the risk. In exchange for money, they trade separation from their family and loved ones, and often, even their dreams.

Richard Corminal is no different from a regular overseas Filipino worker because he gave up his dream to become a mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete in order to give his household a better life. Corminal had always wanted to be an MMA fighter, more so as he watched the exciting sport on television during its renaissance in the early 2000’s.

His obsession with MMA led him to learn the martial art of Muay Thai, which served as his basic foundation. Corminal was on his way to becoming an MMA fighter when he was forced to leave the Philippines to work abroad to be his family’s breadwinner.

Corminal took the job of a Muay Thai trainer at MuayFit, which is one of the premier MMA gyms in Malaysia. Slowly, Corminal relinquished his dream of becoming a professional MMA competitor and became content in being a Muay Thai instructor at MuayFit.

However, the gym proprietor whom he worked for took notice of his exceptional talent and gave him a new lease to revive and fulfill his dream.

Starting his MMA journey

When Corminal got into intensive training, it was not a walk in the park for him because there were numerous martial arts disciplines that he needed to master due to the multi-faceted aspect of MMA. Even though Corminal bit the bullet with every test, the people around him did not repress to lend their helping hands. Corminal trained with ONE Championship athletes such as Eric and Edward Kelly, who once worked as trainers at MuayFit and represented the Malaysian MMA training facility in their respective bouts.

Moreover, his growth as a cage combatant was developed with the assistance of other Philippine MMA household names and MuayFit teammates like Rolando Gabriel Dy and Carlo Laurel as well as the father-and-son duo of Raysaldo and Fritz Biagtan. Corminal made his first professional MMA stint in October 2012, winning against an experienced Malaysian fighter by way of second-round stoppage.

Ever since his maiden foray into the sport, Corminal never looked back and cemented his position as one of the top prospects in the Southeast Asian region. The 35-year-old Filipino lightweight standout currently holds a win-loss slate of 4-1, with all of his career victories to date coming by way of knockout. His success in minor MMA leagues served as his footstool to be noticed by ONE Championship, which is widely recognized as Asia’s largest MMA organization.

Corminal is set to make his ONE Championship debut against Thai mainstay Shannon “OneShin” Wiratchai in the co-headliner of ONE: WARRIOR KINGDOM, which takes place at the 12,000-capacity Impact Arena in Bangkok Thailand on 11 March. According to Corminal, being part of ONE Championship’s burgeoning roster of world-class athletes is the culmination of the hard work and dedication that he invested to be an MMA fighter.

If he previously only imagined to be an MMA fighter, now Corminal will see how far he has gone in the sport as he shares the ONE Championship cage with Wiratchai. Although it took years before he saw his dream turn into reality, Corminal chose to hold on to it.

ONE: WARRIOR KINGDOM Joshua Pacio's promises

“He is a former champion. There shouldn’t be room even for a single mistake in this bout. One mistake took everything away from me in my last fight. This time around, I can’t be complacent. Moreover, I have to be two steps or three steps ahead of him. Expect that I will be a better competitor inside the cage. My team has prepared a good strength and conditioning program to level up my cardio. I made sure to sharpen my striking. I also invested time in my ground game. It’s not a defeat. I think of it as a lesson. It has served as an inspiration and a reminder to work hard and push myself to the limit in training. I am still young, and there are a lot of valuable things to learn in MMA. I believe great things are ahead of me. It’s going to be an action-packed fight. He is a striker and a world champion in Muay Thai. I have a Wushu background. It will be exciting for sure. I want to fight for the title again. I was winning in that fight. I have to move on and focus on my next task. I believe that a win over Dejdamrong will put me back into the position to fight for the title again.” ~Joshua Pacio

When Joshua Pacio faced Japanese veteran Yoshitaka Naito for the ONE Strawweight World Championship title four months ago, it appeared that capturing the prestigious gold-plated strap was within the Filipino fighter’s reach.

In the opening salvo, Pacio effortlessly stuffed all five takedown attempts of Naito and was clearly getting the best out of the stand-up exchanges.

Naito was finally able to get the fight to where he wanted with a successful single-leg takedown in second frame, but Pacio remained active on the ground by landing elbows and keeping his shoulders off the ground while looking to create space with his legs.

However, it only took one crucial mistake in the third round to crush Pacio’s championship aspirations as Naito secured a rear-naked choke to keep the ONE Strawweight World Championship belt around his waist.

Eager to put himself back on the winning track, Pacio is set to make his return to the ONE Championship cage on 11 March to square off with former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke on the undercard of ONE: WARRIOR KINGDOM, which is set to happen at the 12,000-seater Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

Pacio guarantees a better version of himself as he crosses paths with an ex-world titleholder like Dejdamrong.

Pacio admitted that his third-round submission setback to Naito acted as a valuable lesson and a reasonable opportunity to patch the loopholes in his skillset and mature as a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) competitor.

The 21-year-old Baguio City native expects that his three-round strawweight encounter with Dejdamrong will have no shortage of firepower as both men possess outstanding striking pedigrees.

Pacio has a Wushu Sanshou background, while Dejdamrong is a three-time Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai world champion.

Seeking to vie for the ONE Strawweight World Championship once more, Pacio believes that a decisive victory over Dejdamrong will strengthen his bid to get a rematch with Naito.

Eduard Folayang as Philippines’Next Global Sports Icon sees ONE Championship Chairman

“My dream is to see a local star becoming a national star, and then he becomes a global superstar. I think that in Eduard Folayang, we have a big potential there. With Manny Pacquiao retiring, he is going to leave a big void in the Philippines because he is a sports hero. I believe Eduard Folayang has all the right makings of becoming the next flag bearer of the Philippines on an international stage. Manny’s story inspires everybody. He evolved from a Manila street kid to a global superstar, but he remained so kind and humble. That’s what we saw in Eduard Folayang as well. Nothing has changed even if he is now a world champion. It’s just the same old Eduard as before. In order to become a legend, you have to beat a legend. He did that despite being dominated by Shinya Aoki in the first round. Eduard Folayang showed what it’s like to conquer the odds. I love him as a champion. He represents true martial arts values. He is humble and courageous. He is mentally strong. He has a warrior spirit. He’s always training and upgrading his skills. Today, he’s genuinely a well-rounded mixed martial artist. But most importantly as a human being, he really exemplifies everything that is wonderful about martial arts and Asia. He has the humility, kindness, strength, integrity, and courage. This is to me what Eduard Folayang is. I really believe that he can become a global superstar in the same way that Manny Pacquiao is. Eduard Folayang is going to defend his world title in his home country for the first time. I want the entire country, if you’re a Filipino or have a Pinoy heart, you’ve got to watch this fight.” ~Chatri Sityodtong, ONE Championship Chairman

If there is one athlete who put the Philippines on the map of the international sporting scene, it is Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao has captured 13 world titles in eight different weight classes and was hailed "Fighter of the Year" three times by both The Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).

In addition, the BWAA body recognized Pacquiao with the "Fighter of the Decade" citation for the 2000s. Aside from the world titles and awards, Pacquiao was long rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world by most sporting news and boxing websites.

From his professional debut in 1995 as a minimumweight competitor, Pacquiao rose up the scales to claim outstanding victories over the who’s who of the boxing industry, including Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito and Timothy Bradley Jr.
Transitioning from boxing’s best kept secret to a global sporting figure, Pacquiao’s shocking eighth-round stoppage triumph over De La Hoya in December 2008 made him a crossover star and a media darling. However, Pacquiao is in the final stretch of his illustrious 22-year prizefighting career and plans to call it a day in 2017 with a four-fight farewell tour.

As Pacquiao’s curtain call is looming,   sees Filipino mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Eduard Folayang as the perfect successor of the 38-year-old pugilist from the South Cotabato suburb of General Santos. From meager beginnings to magnanimous victories.

According to Sityodtong, Pacquiao and Folayang have striking similarities as both men had tough beginnings with barely anything to start out with—from penniless homes to underprivileged surroundings. In order to support their own families, Pacquiao and Folayang dabbled into sports, seeing it as their only escape from poverty.

Squeezing through the eye of a needle to survive, Pacquiao and Folayang conquered difficult odds and established themselves among the best and the brightest athletes of their respective sports. Despite their successes in their individual fields, Pacquiao and Folayang remained humble as the two highly-decorated fighters preferred not to scowl and flaunt what they have achieved.

Last November, Folayang pulled off an upset victory over Japanese legend Shinya Aoki to become an MMA world champion after nearly ten years of strutting his wares in the sport. The 33-year-old Baguio City native dethroned Aoki by way of third-round technical knockout, driving a hard knee to the head before unleashing a barrage of punches to coerce referee Yuji Shimada to wave it off.

Sityodtong, who owns over 30 professional bouts as a Muay Thai practitioner, stressed that Folayang’s character exemplifies the true beauty of martial arts. Sityodtong is fully convinced that Folayang will be following the footsteps of Pacquiao as a worldwide sports icon.

Folayang will be defending his ONE Lightweight World Championship belt for the first time against a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the main event of ONE Championship’s return to Manila, Philippines on 21 April.

Saying “I DO” to your shared goals with Insular Life

“I always begin my financial planning sessions with couples by reminding them of their wedding vows, the parts to which they said ‘I do’. From that simple statement, these individuals are already recognizing that, from that day forward, what she owns is his and what he owns is hers. Together, we clarify the roles, obligations, and financial impact of each partner on attaining their goals. Filipinos plan for everyone. We take our families with us in our Magandang Bukas. Planning for young professionals, actually means planning for their parents, siblings, and maybe even nephews and nieces. Life events inevitably makes our financial maps interrelated. I don’t think I can bear the thought of not helping my family out, if they face great shocks like a health crisis. It doesn’t even have to be about money per se. Most times, I would tell my clients that they can protect their families more with investments and insurance. When the time comes, their P20,000 will be worth so much more. Had it been the other way around, I know that I would still be on edge, worrying about the people in my life. being ready for life is being ready for the totality of it—the good, the bad, and all circumstances that life throws at you. ~Julius “July” Iglesias Nanlabes, Financial Consultan
For Insular Life financial adviser July Nanlabes, the promise of a Magandang Bukas starts with a couple’s “I do”.

The wedding vows’ most memorable lines are salient points for keeping balanced finances: To have and to hold, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, and to love and cherish in all of their days. These couples are now partners, and so they must set about their dreams together and build the groundwork of financial planning with their intertwined fates in mind. They can choose to each carry half of the load with their dreams in tow, or pull away towards different directions and meet further down the road.

Couples decide on the “I DO’s”
July advises various clients in managing their wealth and estate. He has guided couples, families, and individuals teaming up for their dreams in his career as an Insular Life financial adviser. At this step, couples stay true on their promise and devote time to ensure they are adequately prepared for the future. Of course, this is also where their different ideals and priorities arise, and when they have to tackle the challenge of building a life together.

The partners will have to arrive at a shared aspiration or a set of goals, to which they can both say “I do”. From there, July guides the couple in mapping out their goals and developing a financial framework that best serve their objectives.

These couples usually envision a comfortable life for their family, an educational fund for their children, and a good life to retire to, and the best thing is that many of them are on their way to fulfilling their dreams. They have found a great match with their financial agent and Insular Life’s experts who are with them for the long run.

Some of July’s clients have transitioned to different life stages, where they have more complex financial needs. These clients are looking at estate planning for the next generation, business succession planning, goodwill, community projects, and endeavors that will leave a legacy of their lives.

Single and in the best financial form
Of course, there are also many ways to live a happy and full life on your own. July is first to tell others that being single does not mean being devoid of responsibility. July candidly reveals that his own financial plan is rich with aspirations for his family.

According to him, peace of mind is only attainable if he and his family can reach their goals individually, and maybe even accomplish some goals together.

Financial planning maybe an unlikely avowal of love, but financial advisors like July have seen it nurture many fairy tale-like romances. Their stories of Magandang Araw started with putting the right priorities in the foreground and saying “I do” to the best life they can strive for. Even with life’s plot twists, these partnerships blossomed to a Magandang Bukas.

#IAmYou - Opening Minds, Opening Hearts

An International Leadership Summit in Inclusive Education

QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES – February 6, 2017. For the first time, educators, legislators, service providers, support groups/associations, international organizations, disabled people organizations, international and local students and parents will gather together at the SMX Convention Center Manila on February 22-24, 2017 to set the cornerstone for building an intentional and proactive community for inclusive education. The theme of this event is I Am You – Opening Minds, Opening Hearts: Putting Values into Action.

Given the broad scope of inclusive education that encompasses people with disabilities, indigenous people, Muslims and other marginalized communities, most of the topics and discussion at this February Summit will focus on people with disabilities. The end goal is to build on this Summit, the beginning of a series of conferences, the greater essence of inclusive education – education for all.
Vice President Leni Robredo will grace the event in providing welcome remarks together with Australian Ambassador Amanda Gorely, UNICEF Country Representative Lotta Sylwander and SM Supermalls President Anna Maria Garcia. Senator Bam Aquino and Congressman Alfred Vargas are expected to present the joint bill to serve the people with disabilities worked on by the organizing committee spearheaded by the Fully Abled Nation. They will be joined by Engineer Bien Mateo of SM Cares, Rhodora Palomar-Fresnedi of Unilab Foundation, Carmen Reyes-Zubiaga of the National Council on Disability Affairs and Atty. Adel Tamano to share their programs and messages of inspiration.

Renowned international experts in inclusive education are expected to provide the keynotes at the Summit, namely Professor Tony Booth from the University of Cambridge, celebrated author of the Index for Inclusion (translated into 40 languages),  and David Hoff of the Boston based Institute for Community Inclusion.

We also have extraordinary people sharing their overcoming-disability-to succeed success stories - Sarah Jane Dela Rosa, a 22 year old student with cerebral palsy fully included in a regular class; Erick Marco Ramos, the first blind person to qualify for the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program administered by the US Fulbright Commission and currently a faculty member at Philippine Normal University;  Dr. Rex Bernardo from the University of Sydney, currently a professor of Mabini Colleges; and Joy Garcia, Chief Executive Officer of Tahanan ng Walang Hagdan. Finally, Mr. Tony Llanes, the blind founder of ATRIEV (Adaptive Technology for the Rehabilitation, Integration and Empowerment of Visually Impaired) will be demonstrating digital resources for the blind.

Schools, both public and private, parents, service providers and support groups will share best practices/perspectives on how inclusion works for their children. They will also be joined by highly respected developmental and behavioral pediatricians namely Dr. Francis Dimalanta and Dr. Stella Manalo and the Harvard graduates from the International Education Policy program.

One of the program highlights will include the showing of the powerfully moving documentary “Yakap”, which follows the lives of three families of children with special needs, produced by Dolores Cheng of the Center of Possibilities.  Along with this is the exhibition of #DrawDisability, a global art campaign launched by the United Nations Secretary General’s Global Education First Initiative (GEFI), in partnership with the Global Observatory for Inclusion (GLOBI) and the United Nations Global Education First Initiative Youth Advocacy Group (GEFI-YAG).

The Summit aims to call for a unified response – #YesToInclusion and to spearhead a movement that will advocate for the right of the individual with a disability to be educated along with his/her peers in the regular classroom.

For registrations to the summit and corporate sponsorships, please visit www.theteachersgallery.com, www.iamyouinclusion.net or contact Mai Roble at 0977-8095110 or 0998-554-8522 or 02-352-2675.

About the Organizers:
The Summit is co-presented by The Teacher’s Gallery and SMX/SM Cares and is supported in planning by Basic Education Transformation Sector (BEST), the Unilab Project Inclusion, The Asia Foundation/Fully Abled Nation, Best Buddies, Save the Children, ATRIEV, Norfil Foundation, Center for Possibilities Foundation Inc., Leonard Cheshire Disability, CEU Inclusion Program, Reach International, UP College of Education, and the Philippine Association for Teachers Educators (PAFTE).

The main organizer, The Teacher’s Gallery (TTG), is a social enterprise formed out of an advocacy for inclusive education and a drive to  empower  teachers in their role of nation building. TTG offers transformational educational programs that include Global Study Tours (US, Canada, UK and Southeast Asia) where participants observe several US inclusive classrooms, and engage with their peers. TTG co-founder, Ms. Lilibeth Aristorenas, was inspired to form this organization from the challenges observed at Precious Gem Academy, Another Home to Grow and Creative Learner’s Home, small schools she also co-founded nestled in Fairview, Quezon City, focused on continuously improving their inclusive practice.

The summit is held in partnership with SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility of SM Prime Holdings, Inc., and the SMX Convention Center. SM Cares advocacies include programs on persons with disabilities, senior citizens, children and youth, women and breastfeeding, OFWs (SM Global Pinoy), environment and sustainability and social entrepreneurship. SM Cares’ program on persons with disabilities has instituted key programs to address the needs of PWDs which earned its reputation of being the most PWD-friendly mall in the country.
