Celebrate Furry at FurryPinas 2018

FurryPinas 2018 will be the first ever furry convention open to the public, after its first event in 2014. Holding the record as being the first furry convention in Southeast Asia, FurryPinas is the official and only furry convention in the Philippines.

Do you know what a Furry is?  Well, if you have seen movies like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Zootopia, The Lion King, shows such as My Little Pony, or anime such as Pokemon then you might have an idea. FurryPinas 2018, happening on May 19-20 at the SMX Convention Center, is a celebration of everything furry. The convention’s vision is to serve as the annual hub for furry or anthropomorphic media.

What is the Furry Hobby?
Furry is not only a fandom but also a hobby.  If you enjoy looking at personified animals in different forms of media be it movies, TV shows, anime, comics, etc., then you are part of the Furry hobby. Some examples of animal characters would include famous characters like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, and many more.

Most of the communities involved in the Furry Hobby had been established long ago.  Take for example Sylvanian Families, one of the most popular toys in the market which has existed since 1985. Made by the Japanese gaming company Epoch in 1985, Sylvanian Family is a collection of anthropomorphic animal figurines and model sets. Distributed around the world, they have become so popular that there is a growing community here in the Philippines, one that remains strong to this day.

Other communities such as a fanbase for Pokemon have been very lively since the countless adorable critters have been popping out not only in our gaming consoles but also in our phones, in the form of Pokemon Go. It is not uncommon to see someone throwing virtual Pokeballs at a virtual Pokemon while walking.

Why would you attend FurryPinas 2018?
It is one of the most unique conventions happening this 2018. If you will be attending, then you are among the first to experience this one of a kind event.  Despite being such a unique event, the tickets are also affordable with the basic entry level ticket costing at Php 115 inclusive of a lanyard and a con ID badge (early bird).

That’s not all! Anyone who purchases a ticket will surely get freebies during the event.  FurryPinas 2018 recognizes everyone who supports the event, no matter the type of ticket they buy, but do remember that greater freebies are in store for those who want more.

If you are an artist, designer, cosplayer, a fan of movies, shows, toys, and other content featuring anthro or humanized animals then you would not want to miss this.  This event will bring you various activities and features which you will surely love!

What happens at FurryPinas 2018?
FurryPinas 2018 brings two huge guests in the Furry Hobby.  First is Pocari Roo, an Australian furry fan and full-time YouTuber with over 100 videos on her channel and over 50,000 subscribers. She is primarily known for her Youtube channel where she does vlogs, music videos, how-tos, Q&As, and more, with a family-friendly rating and a primary focus on being positive, entertaining, and helpful.

Bapogichi is also guesting at FurryPinas 2018.  A fan of the furry hobby with over 40,000 followers, Bapogichi is a popular illustrator known for his various fanart of anime, webcomics, cartoons, and video games. Bapogichi is one of the moderators of the popular Buhay Kolehiyo that features personified versions of different universities in the Philippines.

Of course, the event reserves tons of interactive activities for all attendees, including talks and seminars relating to the Furry Hobby, an area to play different video games from retro to modern games and tabletop games, various contests on and off the stage, and dances and performances, among others.

One highlight of FurryPinas 2018 includes the Furry Rave Party, happening at the very end of the con, which is a celebration for all Furry Hobbyist to enjoy. Also, don’t forget the dealer's den, tavern area, carnival area, and many more!

Not convinced yet?  Then, why not head on and watch this video to know more about FurryPinas 2018 - http://bit.ly/furrypinas2018. (Press Note: For ONLINE MEDIA please embed the video on your site if possible.)

RJ Agustin is now a talent of ABS-CBN owned recording company, Star Music.

“Nasa dugo ko talaga ang pagiging artist. Gusto ko maging boses ng mga nasaktan sa love pero positive and hopeful pa din sa huli.” ~Singer, recording artist and actor RJ Agustin

Last January 24, 2018, is a remarkable day for singer, recording artist and actor RJ Agustin. He signed an exclusive contract for a top music label, Star Music Philippines. He is one of the artists who will be managed by the said recording label giant this 2018.

RJ Agustin began singing at a young age but initially pursued acting in films and television as he is also the son of 80s director Arturo “Boy” San Agustin who directed Robin Padilla and FPJ back in the days. RJ appeared in films like the award-winning Cinemalaya film 1st Ko Si 3rd and in the 2016 MMFF film Kabisera where he played Nora Aunor’s son. For RJ, singing is more than a hobby, it is his passion. He began his singing career in out-of-town and bar gigs.

He is a young singer with a passionate heart – lots of it – something hoarded from past experiences but he insists that this does not stop him from having a positive outlook on life and love.  This, he feels, will translate in his music. Indeed his fans call him the male voice of the millennials, both soulful and hopeful.

This is why RJ was overjoyed when Star Music head Roxy Liquigan and Jonathan Manalo met with him and made him a part of their recording label.

RJ is looking forward to a bright future with Star Music Philippines. RJ Agustin is managed by FAM or Firestarters Artists Management.

Athletics for Tanduay Locked In for Grassroots Basketball

“When we formed Tanduay Athletics, we had grassroots youth development as one of its major thrusts. We believe we can give equal opportunities to aspiring basketball talents from the cities and the regions through MPBL. We put our hope in the next generation to make better their lives and become useful to society. To give meaning to words, we support avenues that will enable them like the MPBL and Batangas is close to home. That makes this endeavor special and worthwhile. We have a very encouraging start with the strong performance of the team. We hope to continue the momentum. But in every league or sport we support, what’s important is how we are making a difference in the lives of the athletes. How they develop as individuals and how they will continue to inspire a nation as an athlete like Manny Pacquiao is why we are here to support. ~Lucio “Bong” Tan, Jr., President of Tanduay Distillers Inc.
Mr. Lucio “Bong” Tan, Jr. is taking his support to grassroots sports a step further as he goes on the full offensive for Batangas Tanduay Athletics in the new Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). Tan, whose passion for basketball was cultivated in childhood, believes he saw a formidable ally in MPBL founder Sen. Manuel Pacquiao in providing opportunities for local talents from the regions to advance their basketball dreams.

The MPBL features teams that represent a province, city or municipality in a home-and-away setup, where players get to play in front of hometown fans. Each team is required to have at least three players that are homegrown to the area they represent.

Aside from Batangas Tanduay Athletics, other teams playing for the MPBL include Bataan Defenders, Bulacan Kuyas, Valenzuela Classic, Marikina Athletics, Caloocan Supremos, Navotas Redcore, and Muntinlupa.

Tanduay Distillers’ alcohol refinery Absolut Distillers Inc. has been operating for 26 years in Lian, Batangas. It is one of the country’s most advanced distilleries that has received multiple local and international awards for operating on zero waste and employing green practices.

The Batangas-Tanduay Athletics had an early win during a match with Valenzuela Classic and Bataan Defenders as former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) players Val Acuna and Lester Alvarez lead the way for the new team.

MPBL games air every Tuesday, Thursday, and ‪Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m in ABS-CBN Sports and Action. ‬‬

Tanduay Distillers Inc. is a member of the LT Group of Companies. Tanduay is the Philippines’ top rhum maker, which is also distributed in Asia and the United States, among other countries in the world. Likewise, the company produces spirits, wines, brandies, gins, and vodka. We are a registered company in the Philippine stock exchange as a subsidiary of Tanduay Holdings Inc.

THE PICTURE THIS FESTIVAL FOR THE PLANET TO SHOWCASE EMERGING FILMMAKERS

SUBMISSIONS FOR FILMS TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OPEN JANUARY 30. Judges Include “The Blacklist Star” and Environmental Advocate Megan Boone

Sony Pictures Television Networks (SPTN), in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, today announced the opening of the Picture This Festival for the Planet (www.sonypicturethis.com), a short-film competition for emerging filmmakers, everyday storytellers and changemakers worldwide to showcase the positive future they see for our planet. Starting today, people from over 70 countries around the world are invited to submit videos between one and eight minutes in length inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of global goals agreed upon by all 193 member states of the United Nations to end poverty, protect the planet and promote prosperity for all.

Andy Kaplan, President, Sony Pictures Television Networks, said: “At Sony, we are proud champions of the intersection between storytelling and innovation and are incredibly excited to spearhead Picture This. With the support of the United Nations Foundation and our other partners, we look forward to elevating and amplifying these important development goals through the voices of emerging creatives and acknowledge their good work in a meaningful way.”

Partners in this year's festival are: the United Nations Foundation, the United Nations Association of the United States of America, WeTransfer, Sony World Photography Awards, Sony Alpha Universe, the Environmental Media Association and leaders and environmental visionaries from around the globe. SPTN launched a similar contest in 2016 across its channel portfolio worldwide, including its flagship brands in Asia, AXN, Sony Channel, GEM, ONE and Animax and those same channels will participate in this year’s festival.

In addition to Kaplan, the list of celebrity advocates and industry leaders who will judge film submissions includes: Megan Boone, environmental advocate and actress from the hit TV series “The Blacklist,”; Elizabeth Cousens, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, United Nations Foundation; Marie Jacobson, EVP Programming & Production, Sony Pictures Television Networks; Tom Bernard & Michael Barker, Co-Presidents, Sony Pictures Classics; Mr. N.P. Singh, MD & CEO, Sony Pictures Networks India; Glenn Gainor, President of Physical Production, Screen Gems; Debbie Levin, President & CEO, Environmental Media Association; and Damian Bradfield, President and Chief Marketing Officer, WeTransfer. Elizabeth Cousens, Deputy CEO of the United Nations Foundation, said: “The Picture This Festival for the Planet is an innovative new platform to connect global audiences to what is happening on the ground as people put the SDGs into action in their daily lives. The United Nations Foundation appreciates Sony’s deep commitment to sustainability and its willingness to leverage its creativity and reach to bring the SDGs to new audiences. By celebrating individual stories of people around the world actively working to protect people and planet, Picture This will help inspire others to join the effort to realize these ambitious – and achievable – goals."

In mid-2018, eight (8) regional winners will be flown to Los Angeles to attend the Picture This Festival for the Planet for a day of networking and training alongside industry leaders and social impact partners at the Sony Pictures Studio lot, followed by a screening of the regional winners’ films. Regional winners will receive airfare and accommodations for two nights in Los Angeles, along with a Sony RX0 Camera and a one year WeTransfer Plus account, with the grand prize winner honored with a Sony A6500 camera and a SEL1670 lens. In Asia, the first 100 successful entries will receive a one-year WeTransfer Plus account worth US$120 each.

The Picture This Festival for the Planet is Sony Pictures Entertainment’s latest project to bring awareness to the SDGs. In 2016, the United Nations and SPE launched Angry Birds for a Happy Planet, a global youth outreach campaign that leveraged online and social media platforms to encourage action to protect the planet and fight climate change. Centered on the Sustainable Development Goal #13 – to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, the campaign featured Red and other characters of The Angry Birds Movie. In 2017, supported by the cast of the Smurfs: The Lost Village, audiences were encouraged to join “Team Smurfs” for the “Small Smurfs Big Goals” campaign that inspired everyone to learn about and support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Submissions for the Picture This Festival for the Planet will open January 30 and close April 30, 2018. The contest will be open to entrants from select countries worldwide. Please visit sonypicturethis.com for more information and to enter for free. You can follow the Picture This Festival @SPTPictureThis on social media on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

SYNOPSIS 2
  • Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, TONYA is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed an attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. The Sandy Project Marks 5th Year as Dengue Awareness Advocate with Fundraising Activity

“More and more it’s becoming clear to me that my advocacy, and how it started, I’m really in the right direction, because of the relevance and importance of keeping the children aware of dengue and teaching them how to take care of themselves, which leads to the prevention part.” ~Atty. Ma. Louella “Peaches” Aranas

As it marks its fifth year now, this advocacy that has been teaching school-age children on the dangers of dengue and how best to protect themselves from it will be holding a fundraising activity this February 12, 2018, at the Green Sun building in Makati City.

With dengue concerns rampant for many years now, it is deemed important to raise awareness from this mosquito-borne disease. One of the worthwhile advocacy we have in the country now concerning dengue-awareness is The Sandy Project.

The project named after the daughter of Lawyer Ma. Louella “Peaches” Aranas started the advocacy in 2013 after her daughter Sandy succumbed to dengue when she was 10 years old. For this fundraising, her group is looking for benefactors who will help with this project to reach at least 5,000 school kids for 2018.

Dengue is on the front page since last year when scandal relating to the controversial vaccine and immunization program launched by the government resulted from the deaths of several children who undergo the vaccination and immunization program. Atty. Aranas is convinced that the Sandy Project is on the right track and this February, its 5th year of advocacy, they will hold the “Night of Thanksgiving and Charitable Giving” event.

The dengue awareness and prevention campaign advocacy focus on the children as the target audience. Atty. Aranas, a successful tax lawyer running her own LMA Law firm, has been largely self-funding this project. In previous years, the project has reached 300 children in Quezon City and Bacolod City.

In this time of fear, we need to be conscientious enough and help in the awareness and prevention of this disease. For more information on The Sandy Project and its fifth-year activity next month, you can visit www.facebook.com/thesandyproject.
