Aging and Weight Gain: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Gaining weight with each passing year is something many people seem to take for granted. At least, that’s the sense I get when I talk to many of my older patients, who are reluctant to take care of ever-expanding waistlines. Many of them think that “everybody puts on a few pounds as they age,” or they’ll point out that “I’ve gotten this far eating the way that I do—I’m not about to change now.”

Aging and weight gain don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand. Here’s why weight tends to creep up as you get older, along with some steps you can take to keep your weight in check.

Why People Gain Weight as They Age

Gaining weight as you get older happens for the same reasons it happens at any stage of life: it’s a matter of a calorie imbalance. Whenever you eat more calories than your body needs—when your “calories in” are more than your “calories out”—the extra calories get stored away as body fat. With aging, it’s the “calories out” side of the equation, the number of calories the body burns each day, that tends to tip the balance. And there are a few reasons for this.

You may have heard that as you age your resting metabolic rate, which is the number of calories your body burns through every day just to keep your basic processes going, tends to drop. And it does. With every passing decade, the average person’s daily burn drops by about 150 calories.

This is because your resting metabolic rate is determined, in large part, by how much muscle mass you have relative to the amount of fat you have. Pound-for-pound (or kilo-for-kilo), muscle tissue burns a lot more calories than fat tissue does. And we tend to lose muscle mass as we age. As the amount of muscle tissue drops, so does your resting metabolic rate.

This loss of muscle mass can be attributed to a few things. First, as people age, their activity levels tend to decrease. They may do less exercise overall, and the intensity level of the exercise might also decline.

As muscles are used and challenged less, it should come as no surprise that there may be some loss of this metabolically active tissue. To be fair, a small amount of muscle loss may be unavoidable. The body’s ability to repair muscle tissue wear and tear does seem to decline with age, even if exercise intensity remains constant.

So, when all is said and done, this shift in body composition with the loss of calorie-torching muscle tissue means that your daily calorie needs drop as a result. If there’s no change on the “calories in” side of the equation—if you continue to eat as you always have—those extra calories that you’re not using are going to get stored away. And you’ve got a case of slow and steady weight gain on your hands.

There’s something else at play here as well. As people get older, the quality of the calories they take in sometimes shifts, too, in a way that can work against them.

For example, taking in adequate protein is necessary to help maintain muscle mass. In fact, older adults may actually have slightly higher protein needs than younger adults. But as people age, calories that were once spent on lean protein might now be spent on carbohydrates or fats.
Several factors might contribute to this shift. Taste changes, financial concerns, or even the lack of desire or energy to prepare meals. All of these can drive choices more in the direction of starchy, sweet, fatty foods that are easy to eat and prepare.

Five Tips for Avoiding Age-Related Weight Gain

Now that you know why weight gain happens with age, it should be pretty clear what steps you need to take in order to keep your weight in check.
•   Since muscle tissue burns calories at a much more rapid pace than fat does, maintaining muscle mass is clearly one of the most important things you can do. You are capable of building muscle throughout your lifetime, so engage in activities that challenge your muscles to your build and maintain them.
•    In order to support muscle repair and growth, be sure to include plenty of protein in your diet. Plant sources of protein, such as peas, beans and especially soy, which is a complete protein, offer healthy and affordable options to meet your daily needs.
If you’re not in the habit of including plenty of vegetables and fruits in your diet, now is the time to start working on it. Vegetables and whole fruits are nutrient-dense, which means that they pack a lot of nutrition for relatively few calories. Buy fruits and veggies in season whenever possible—they’re often fresher and more affordable. And don’t overlook the freezer section of the supermarket. Frozen fruits and vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh varieties; they’re super-convenient, and there’s no waste.
Since every calorie counts, pay close attention to the extras in your diet. Calories from fats, sweets, and alcohol add up quickly, so choose wisely and use them sparingly.
Try to be in charge of your diet as much as you can. If cooking is a chore, seek out quick, healthy recipes, and always cook extra so you can put food away for another meal. Eating out is fun and convenient, but educate yourself as to the best choices so you don’t overdo it. Restaurant portions are often large and servers may push you to order extras you don’t want, so decide ahead of time what you’ll eat and commit to it.

5 Tips for daily habits to adopt for a healthy life!

It’s never too late to take better care of yourself. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the best way to achieve physical, mental, and emotional health. But with today's generation and fast faced technology comes along lots of new technologies and types of equipment making and preparing our foods in an easy and convenient way especially in food chains. And since everyone nowadays seems to always be in a hurry that is why it is challenging, especially for those who have formed unhealthy habits over the years to switch back to the old ways of preparing food in a healthy way.

Once you get into the habit of maintaining healthy practices and making them a part of your routine, you will start to see its benefits to your well-being.

Here are Santé Baley's five daily habits you can start integrating into your daily life.

1. Get moving
Daily physical activities are essential to maintaining a healthy body and reducing the major risk factors for chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, non-coronary heart disease, hypertension, among others.

Exercising is not only good for the body, but also for the mind. According to FNRI-DOST, exercise helps enhance psychological well-being, improve self-esteem, and maintain motivation.

Simple activities like walking, running, biking, or even stretching, can help maintain weight loss. Committing to regular exercise may be challenging at first, but over time, as you continue doing it, you will start to see the benefits it can provide to your body.

2. Get more sleep
Sleep, just like exercise and a healthy diet, plays an important role in health and well-being. Loss of quality sleep not only impacts your mood and performance but, can also result to health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

Getting enough sleep – seven to eight hours -- poses tremendous benefits to achieve both mental and physical wellness so you can be at your best every day.

3. Manage distress
There are many factors in our lives that can lead to distress, such as work, school, traffic congestion, and relationship problems. Distress is a natural reaction and, is the body’s ways of responding to the mental or emotional strain or tension from adverse or demanding circumstances. However, chronic or long-term distress can be a precursor to issues such as depression, anxiety, and even memory loss.

Thankfully, distress is something that can be managed. One good way to deal with it is through a balanced schedule. Try to find time for yourself in between work and social life. This allows you to have a new perspective, so you feel less overwhelmed. Having a social support where you can share your concerns can also help relieve distress. However, it is important to note that everyone is different. Thus, it is essential to experiment and find out what best works for you.

4. Avoid smoking
It is no secret that tobacco has negative impacts on health. In fact, smoking remains as one of the leading causes of death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills more than seven million people each year. More than six million of these deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 890,000 are caused by second-hand smoking.

By refraining from smoking tobacco, you get to reduce the risk of getting illnesses, such as lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, asthma, among others. In addition, you also get to protect the people you love from the dangerous second-hand smoke.

5. Make better food choices
We’ve all heard of it before, but it’s true—eating healthy is good for you. By making smart, healthy food choices, you help your body get the nutrients it needs every day and lowers your risk to health problems.

The key to eating well is to enjoy a variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups namely:
  • Vegetables and legumes/beans
  • Fruit
  • Grain (cereal) foods
  • Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds and legumes/beans
  • Milk, yogurt cheese and/or alternatives, mostly reduced fat

Consuming foods from every food group help support optimal health and prevent diseases.

To complete your balanced diet, consider drinking natural and organic Santé Barley – available in powder form or in vegetable capsules. Sourced from Santé’s New Zealand farms, Santé Barley is a good source of niacin (vitamin B) that provides numerous benefits to the cardiovascular system. Niacin can help reduce bad cholesterol, lipoprotein (a), and free radical. It also reduces the risk of blood clots. And since it is high in fiber, it can help promote bowel movement for optimal health.

Leading a healthy life may be difficult at first, but if you establish simple daily practices now, then the end result will definitely worth it. Integrating these five daily habits in your life not only makes you feel great about yourself but can also help manage your daily life better. Thus, allowing you to be more productive, so you get to live more and do more.

Herbalifes Healthy Aging in celebration of World's Diabetes Day!

One key to healthy aging is to establish healthy eating and exercise habits when you’re young.

It’s never too late to take better care of yourself. But if you’re young, you might want to listen up—because the habits you establish now can influence your health and well-being as you get older.

Begin Good Habits Now for Healthy Aging.

When you’re young, the thought of getting older is usually far from your mind. But as we age, we often look back and think, “I wish I’d taken better care of myself.” While young people may not like to think about getting old, they would still be wise to pay attention to the eating and exercise habits they establish in their youth. The longer they have to practice healthy eating habits and engage in an active lifestyle, the more likely they are to age healthfully.

Eating is one of the few behaviors that we get to practice several times a day. That means every meal or snack provides an opportunity to reinforce your healthy diet habits—like practicing portion control and choosing nutrient-dense foods. Every time you make the right food choices, you’re more firmly establishing good habits that will stay with you throughout your life.

I have counseled many older patients who have had a lifetime of eating badly and suddenly decide to “shape up.” It might be triggered by a milestone birthday or even a health scare, but what they often tell me is that they wish that they had taken better care of themselves when they were younger. And they find that it’s really hard to change habits they’ve had for decades. As the old saying goes, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

Maintaining Healthy Bones as You Age
  • Strong, healthy bones are really built during adolescence and young adulthood. That’s because of the body’s ability to store calcium in the bones peaks at about age 30. This is a critical period during which you can maximize bone density. So, get plenty of calcium in your diet (about 1000 mg per day) and regularly engage in weight-bearing exercise. Both of which are important to building bone mass, and they’re two of the best things you can do when you’re younger to ensure bone health as you age. But that doesn’t mean all is lost if you’re older. Weight-bearing activity can help to keep bones strong. Taking in adequate calcium every day (needs increase to about 1200 mg per day after age 50) can help reduce the amount that needs to be pulled out of storage from your bones to meet needs.

Maintaining Muscle Mass and a Healthy Weight as You Age
  • Building muscle mass can be done at any age. When you establish the right habits at a young age, which includes consuming adequate protein and engaging in resistance exercise, you’re more likely to continue those habits throughout your life. Since, in large part, lean body mass determines your resting metabolic rate, building up muscle mass is one of the best defenses you have against “creeping obesity.” That’s the slow, incremental upticks in your body fat and weight as you age.

Maintaining Healthy Skin as You Age
  • The foods you put into your body, and the way you take care of your skin when you’re young, can affect the appearance of your skin as you age. Your skin relies on protein to manufacture supporting its structures, and plenty of fluid to help prevent dryness. Getting into the habit of cleansing, moisturizing and regularly using sunscreen when you’re young can help you to maintain a healthy complexion as you get older. Skin damage that happens when you’re young may not show up until decades later, so your best defense is to get in the habit of taking good care of your skin now.

Philippines paves the way for functional medicine in SEA through the first IFM conference in the region

“Uncovering the Interconnections Between Inflammation,
the Gastrointestinal Tract and Toxic Exposure”

Functional Medicine is experiencing a rapid development across the globe. In the Philippines, LifeScience Institute (LSI) champions this approach through various initiatives to educate, train and pursue research on Functional Medicine.

LSI collaborated with The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) to bring the first Advancing Functional Medicine (AFM) Conference in Southeast Asia, happening on November 16 and 17, at the Enderun Colleges in Taguig City.

With the theme “Uncovering the Interconnections Between Inflammation, the Gastrointestinal Tract and Toxic Exposure,” it brings together over 300 local and international doctors and other allied health professionals to talk about the underlying causes of complex chronic diseases through the Functional Medicine model.

The conference is the first of its kind in the Southeast Asian region. It will put the spotlight on the whole-body approach of Functional Medicine, which will equip doctors and patients to understand the body in its holistic sense.

This primary care approach looks at the whole body to provide long-term health solutions instead of targeting specific parts for short-term fixes. It determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root cause of the disease and see how the body responds to the environment and lifestyle.

Through the conference, more allies in the medical field will understand the core principles of this health paradigm. It will delve into the mechanisms of diseases to know how to reverse them and will tackle topics such as the often overlooked gut health, intestinal permeability, and the immune and neurologic function and their effects on one’s overall well-being.

IFM’s very own Lisa Portera-Perry, MD, Michael Stone, MD, and Robert Luby, MD, will be conducting the talks throughout AFM.

As the purveyor of Functional Medicine in the Philippines, LSI vows to continue its advocacy in spreading awareness on the significance of this medical approach, with LSC as its partner. Should you wish to know more about Functional Medicine or to sign up for AFM, you may contact LSI at (0917) 829 7075 or visit www.lsi-sea.org and LSC at (0917) 573 5433 and www.lifescience.ph. To sign up for AFM, you may reach LSI through the contact details above.

Discovery Shores Boracay, Discovery Suites Manila and Discovery Primea, all part of the Preferred Hotels and Resorts family, including sister properties Club Paradise Palawan and Discovery Country Suites have donated food items ranging from rice, cooking oil, condiments, and other basic necessities which can make approximately 11,000 meals.
